Starting to look at these big 50's with that 10 year old BB gun gleam in my eye. Any one have a 50 cal BMG, or have any useful knowledge about them?

I have found some real good reading material on the net so far. Some places sell single shot guns, bolt action magazine fed guns, and the mother of all (at least for us non machine gun buyers) semi auto. Prices range anywhere from $1900 on the low side, and $10,000 on the high side. I did however find a place that makes a 50 BMG upper that fits onto your AR-15 style lower with no mods for $1200. They say nothing is needed but amo. How about a bolt? Surely you cant make a . 223/. 308 bolt fire a . 50 caliber round.

Anyway, as you can see there are many options to pick from. I am leaning towards the rifle look, not so much the "machine gun" look.

I have not seen too much talk about barrel length, composition or diameter. Seems all the places brag about 1000 yard shots. I found one talking about 4000 yard shots. I even found a place that reconditions the 50 cals we had in the Marine Corps, refits them to fire semi auto and sells them with a tri pod for $7000. Very awesome looking, but moving the tri pod alone is enough to wear out an 18 year old kid, let alone a 30 year old man trying to wrestle the whole thing around.

Any thoughts, comments, or experiences welcome. Here is a 1" thick piece of steel that took a direct hit from 1000 yards away.

Chad, When you really decide to have some fun with a 50, try the 50-140 Black Powder Cartridge Rifles. I have been shooting Black Powder Catridge for about 8 months. Great game, shooting silhoutte's with one of these old Buffalo Guns. It puts a whole new look on your face. That 50-140 I mention is a brass 50 cal cartridge 3 1/2 inches long shooting 140 grns of black Powder and a 725 grn bullet, these old rifles are routinely shot at competition at distances of 1,000 to 1,600 yds. Try it you'll like it. Semper Fi --Gunny

Chad,

I would be nervous about the conversion!

When you look at the rifle and the semi auto, they have all kinds of extra cushions and such. I would think the AR frame would rock your world.

I believ one of the SETDR guys has one, and the Ford site was talking about them months ago.

On my wish list, because they are:cool:

Chad,

Check out the Fifty Caliber Shooting Association at: www.fcsa.org I haven't yet taken the plunge due to the price and not too many places on the east coast that would present a challenge shooting a 50. There are a few FCSA member shooting at ranges from 2500 to 3000 yards out on the west coast, pretty impressive.

Chad,

A few weeks back there was a "dateline" type show about the "50 caliber militia". Seems our government is real nervous about folks owning the 50s... 750 gr bullet @ 2700 fps... I kinda understand! You got a varminter with darn near a 2 oz projectile!

The previous reply about Black powder is right... they are a lot of fun. Ya gotta make that shot count!

Fertilizer and diesel fuel in the publics hands can be deadly too, and easier to get than a 50 cal, but you wont see anyone wanting to ban that stuff. Just those mean old nasty guns.

I better get a couple 50 cals. That way when the city folk come out to the country because they dont know how to live off the land once the sh** hits the fan and they are out of food and water, I will be able to pick them off from farther away and wont have such a pile of bodies outside my perimeter  ;)

This thread went from fun to shoot, to serious to shoot. Talking about defending your perimeter, now Chad the 50's that are available to the civilian market could not be a worse choice for defending the homestead. Try using one of those in the middle of the night in a real firefight. Now Chad both of us know that if the little people come in enough numbers, this is a fight we will not win. Not enough of us and too many of them. the best we can hope for is to make a real fight of it. And that's all any Marine ever hopes for. Give me a good M60MK2 any day in that fight. You can save your 50 BMG for those bright days at the range where that muzzle flash don't matter and won't get you killed to quick. Trust me son I know of what I speak, to many years as a 0321, Semper Fi Gunny

Nobody makes a . 50BMG upper for an AR that i have heard of, however, www.tromix.com makes a . 50AE upper for the AR, that may have been what you were thinking of. There is no way in hell an AR lower could handle . 50BMG, not to mention it is nowhere near large enough.

We carry the following . 50BMG rifles where i work:

Barrett: Model 95 (Bolt action, 10 shot)

Model 99 (Bolt action, single shot/loading)

And to non CT residents, the M82A1 (10 shot, semi auto)

We also have the LAR Grizzly, Armalite AR50 (Single shot) and we have a rare, Reseach Armement single shot . 50BMG compltet with a super heavy duty bipod and a scope, used/excellent condition.

We also get Mcmillan rifles in on occasion, but they are way overpriced.

If anybody needs anything, let me know

I'd like to get one of these too. Out of my price range at the moment. :(

Serbu makes a nice looking rifle too. Theyre priced a bit cheaper too. Check out the video on their site. Cool stuff.

Another place that made rifles a little more reasonably priced was Anzio iron works... . or something like that.

I think this is the place:

They also make a bolt action kit. Stock and scope it yourself!

A local shooter here in Utah just got the LAR single shot. He had another guy give him a bunch of old ammo out of B17 from WW2. We went out on the lake(Great Salt Lake) to burn these up for reloadable brass( Just to find that they wheren't reloadable) . He had spent all his cash on the rifle so he didn't have a scope on it yet. Just sighting down the barrel we where able to hit rocks out on the lake as far as we could see. I had alway hear that w/ the Maw duss if you could see it you could hit it. We went through 250 rounds that day:D and boy was it fun.

Here is the down side... . He had had to buy a new special reloading press just for this long round and every reloading thing for it is really pricy:eek:

After that day I put getting a BMG high on my toy list!!!
