I prefer to cruise at about 62 mph towing - it's right in my engines "sweet spot" - lots of reserve power if I need it - I tow at about 16,000 gcw max - a 24 ft Kit fiver... Never ANY problems on the road related to speed.
My RVing bud, who drives a '99 Ford PS WAY too fast, tows an overloaded 33 ft fiver, on 3 different trips with him, he has blown 3 tires, lost one U-joint, and his transmission - somewhere over 4 grand in failures primarily related to fast driving and poor vehicle maintenance - he takes off from a dead stop at full throttle when towing, NEVER lets up on the throttle to help his transmission upshift, and has been a serious PAIN about bragging about his Ford - and knocking Dodges - UNTIL he lost his transmission at 60,000 miles on our last trip together - that $3200 bill has quieted him down considerably, and it REALLY hurt him to see my Dodge hafta drag HIS trailer on to the next town for him while we waited for his Ford to get a new transmission...

But still, THAT was only MONEY - lives are harder to replace when folks drive like idiots...
You hit the nail right on the head, maintinace and driver abuse account for many of the failures I think. You here about these guys that have had many trucks and the transmission has failed in all of them and they blame Dodge, more like a loose nut behind the wheel I think
