Im checking interest on a trans rebuild/overhaul post. I will be rebuilding two transmissions. Im doing a conversion on a Suburban and will be using a 92' 518 trans which I will be rebuilding. The trans in my daily driver just decided to give up the ghost as well. Im in the process of pulling it out now and will be rebuilding it. It is a 94' 518 4wd with lock up. Basically the same trans. I can do photos with some description for those who have never been inside an auto trans. Some think the auto trans is a mysterious mystical thing. If there is interest I will make time for photos and such for the benefit of the members. Let me know. :D

I almost rebuild the 3 speed torquflite on my gas burner a few years ago, but I didn't have a dial indicator yet, and was running out of time.

I would love to see pics because I will probably be rebuilding another in the next year or so.

FYI, make sure you have the right tools to set up the OD, or take it to someone who does. I did my 47RE (newer 518) in december, and didn't have the special tools to measure with to figure out which thrust washer to use. I just threw it together, and now it's biting me in the butt. I think there's too much clearance, because it slips into OD, and everything else hits hard. When the snow's gone and I can drive the 92, I'm pulling the OD unit and getting it fixed the right way.

Thanks for the info. I did the 4L80E that was in my Suburban this past year an did fine. It didnt have a seperate OD unit so Im not sure what the difference is. I just got it removed from the truck today. The ASTG manual has not arrived yet. It should be here tomorrow or Tues. I will be sure to study up on it before I pull it apart. The trans man that I get my parts from is one of the best in the area and real easy to work with. If I get in a jam I know he will be happy to assist anyway he can. Im kind of using this trans as a test bed for the 518 that Im putting behind the CTD in the Suburban... ...
