Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 53 Block And The Famous Crack??

I Just Recently Sold My 96 12v For A 01 24v Now I Hear These Horror Stories Of Some Crack On These 53 Block. What The Heck Is That And Where Do I Look? I Have Already Looked On The Valve Cover Is Has A 53 In It But Do I Need To Look On The Block For The Serial Or What?

Crawl under the truck with a flashlight and take a look on the driver's side of the block - near the front of the motor, just above the pan and below the injection pump. Whaddya see?

not really. I have a 00 with a 55 block. I saw a 01 with a 56 block. its hit or miss my friend

Yep! Plenty of 01 HO's with 53's! I'm a 53 too! 1999 standard equip... . 150,000 & counting with fingers crossed while knocking on wood! :-laf

My 01. 5 has the 55 block, Thank God!! I didn't have a clue about the dreaded 53 issue until after I heard about it here.

All I see on the drivers side is a bunch of small numbers. Am I looking in the right spot?

From what I've read, if all you see is "a bunch of small numbers", you don't have a 53 block. The 53 is pretty big.

MDale, that is what is on my block too,, and below the small numbers,on mine there is a big (about 1" tall) 'B'. It has the 'B' in the same spot on the other side too. No #53 on mine anywhere, I've looked at the entire block high and low, everywhere but inside the thing. Sounds like you got lucky too!!
