Does anyone know of a good place to get 55 gallon barrels? I have seen some on ebay but shipping is more than the barrels and the only place locally I have found is a feed store that only sells plastic barrels. 55 Gallon barrels are or used to be all over, guess im not looking in the right places.

I need 6 or 8 to collect WVO for biodiesel.

Check your local newspaper. The one here get's their ink in 55 gallon steel barrels. The ink is inside a bladder, inside the barrel. Result, nice clean barrel.

I just bought a steel barrel for $5 at a salvage yard in Weathorford, Texas. It was the kind that had the top cut off like what a can opener would do. Barrels with threaded, capped lids and locking bands were $15. Those were the good ones. They originally had liquid chocolate in them, so they were food grade. The guy selling them told me they often chipped out the inch or so of chocolate that remained in the bottom of the barrel and ate it. I was also told that the blue, plastic barrels were replacing a lot of the metal ones. If you think there is a market for the metal ones where you live in NM, let me know. I'll check the bulk prices, and would have not trouble running them out to NM if it was worth it to bring a trailer load. I could probably haul 55-70 of them in a load. Between two salvage yards there were at least 200 barrels for sale, and they have to have a supplier somewhere. If can opener barrels were netting $5, the guy who bought them couldn't have spent more than $2-$3/each for them.
