2018 Ram 2500 - dreaded HCU failure

SB 6304. $1000 fine for idling over 5 minutes

I have I'd guess you could say 5th generation ram 5500 or 2022 ram 5500. About 3 weeks ago I had a rock the size of a grapefruit hit my left front headlight and fender. I have had them both replaced. But my problem is the used oem headlight won't adjust higher then halfway. I need it to go higher or up more. The adjuster screws to a stopping point but the light doesn't move passed halfway. It will go down but not up. I'm confused, at first the bulb was loose but fixed that. Now I'm hitting my head on the wall trying to figure out what to do. Other then taking the light, trim ,and grill off to fix it. Anyone else had a idea what to look for? Other then a hammer, lol

Some times the attachment point can be deformed and eats up a lot of the adjustment. Is the capsule attached to a resin part or a stamping in the core support? If its in sheetmetal, the first thing Id check after confirming the adjuster is not binding is that the mounting points are all in the proper location and not deformed of deflected. That also goes for the places where it attaches and is semi-fixed.. if any one point is out of whack it'll throw off the whole aiming process. Sadly it may require you to go back in to check.

EDIT= Technically we have 4.5 gens as the body, frame, and hard parts other than engine are the same as the 4th gens...they just gave us new nicer interior and a front facelift.

I see this a lot with vehicles up my way with deer clipping fronts of vehicles.

I've hit a few in my lifetime (knock on wood not in a while) and the first thing I check is the headlight alignment. If it's not right, I hand the keys right back over.

Only deer I like is venison jerky or on my dinner plate... ;)

Not much help, but here is the procedure, it's obvious to me to have them figure out if there is something else going on, if they can't you might need to have a post repair inspection completed by another qualified shop for peace of mind nothing else was missed on the repair.

The headlamp might be tracable to the vehicle it.came off of, using the VIN you might be able to find out why that rig was in the salvage system and what the grade of the part was should be listed on the invoice and quote.

We have had our share of shady insurance adjuster try to use sub grade used parts when higher grade used parts were easily found for almost the same price.

Correct. No 5th gen yet, but likely within the next couple years. Wonder what’s taking Ram so long with 2025 details thou….
