5er & toolbox clearence

Finally bought a 5er and aint had time to hook er up yet but was wondering with a over the siderail toolbox if this combo will cause me problems with turning radius, Help me before I break something , I have the LWB and also have to move the box back 8 " for my stacks to fit between the cab and box :{ Kevin

Generally speaking, 5vers and over-the-rail toolboxes don't mix. That's why I bought a WeatherGuard between-the-rails "5ver box".



If you're going to keep your present box, you'll need at least 6" vertical clearance between the 5ver's overhang and the tool box. I doubt you can get the 5ver that high without it towing very nose-high, and you don't want to do that.

I pull a 5th wheel and have an over the rail type tool box, but it's only about 1. 5" tall (over the bedrail). It's a low profile box. I got it from Lowe's but I've seen them at Autozone, Advanced Autoparts, etc. I didn't really want to go with one that sits in the bottom of the bed because I didn't want to loose bed space for hauling full sheets of plywood and stuff.

Even though my signature shows I'm currently in Iowa going to school, I'm from the Lander area.



I too am running the between the rail Weatherguard box(Model 664, 62" wide x 20" length x 19. 25" tall). I wouldn't touch an over the rail box with a fifth wheel or a gooseneck especially if you are moving it back for the stacks. The fiver's have trouble turning with the box and the gooser's are a real pain to hook up without being able to see over the box. I've seen a lot of crinkled over the rail boxes.



Weatherguard is a premier manufacturer of tool boxes and has them in many different configurations. They are made much stronger than the comparable Dee Zee/parts store type boxes. You won't be disappointed but don't let the cost scare you. These are professional boxes made especially for contractors. Two potential options that may work in your case by fitting between the stacks are:



Model 654 - 55" wide X 20" length X 19. 25" deep

Model 674 - 47. 25" wide X 20" lenght X 19. 25" deep

Caution the distance back to the front under the over hang from the bumper will be extra close if not smack into the front . Measure with a mock up from pin to back of box and also to front of trailer . You will have to move the point of mount in respect to the box but it will be the same on the frame , lots to think of measure twice drill once . LOL Ron Bissett in LOUISVILLE KY

I also have the Weatherguard in the bed box. great box. It presents no problem with my set-up (a short bed & towing a 5'er). You will not be disappointed with Weatherguard. (& you can get it in black!) Oo.

The next break I get from school I'm going to have to check your truck out. It sounds pretty tweaked. My dad cruises around in his slightly tweaked truck there in Lander and thinks he is the "Baddest of the Bunch. " I have yet to break his pride by telling him of the other couple of trucks in the area that would smoke his. We pull a couple big trailers and pulling up South Pass the EGT's get a bit warm so we just did minor mods.



Since you're in the area, if you have any trouble with your truck I'd recommend John Kornder. He is the Cummins mechanic at Fremont Motors in Lander. In other words, he sits on his thumbs and watches the Powerstroke mechanic work. He actually has a shop at his house in Riverton that will save you $$$ over the Fremont Motor service center. He also is running a pretty hot truck with all the extra's.

The first day I bought my first 5er, I dinged up a corner of my exterior on my tool box making a sharpe U-turn. Boy was I ******. I complained to the dealer because he never warned me about that happening. He split the cost of the repair. Before I pulled it again, I changed out my box to a between the rails. I see lots of over the rails boxes with 5ers. Guess you'd be ok if you don't make to sharp a turn.
