I am rebuilding my NV4500 after the 5th gear nut backed off, and have discovered what I think may be a problem. On the countershaft and mainshaft, at the output end of the trans, the tapered roller bearing cups will fall through the bores in the case. There may be as much as 0. 001 clearance between the case bore and the cup. I am using timkens of the same number as stock. Is this normal, for expansion due to heat? Or do I have a bad trans case. The original bearing cups do the same thing, and there is no damage or visible wear in the case bore. The original cups have heat temper marks (blueing) on the inside on one side only, but the end play is . 0035" (within the . 002-. 006" spec. )

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jeff

They sound about normal. Those two cups have to move in and out as you shim to get your endplay right so you don't want them too tight. When I rebuilt mine I found the proper shims required to get the right endplay then took it back apart and peened the bore a little to tighten them up a little more. I may ahve done wrong but it's running strong 50k later. :)
