This site has good reading about your trans and Dan, the owner, knows it backwards and forwards. Selling parts, kits, and tools for the work or he'll do it for you.

Moremph,

The 12 point bolts you refered to are 10mm. I would recommend using high quality tools like snap on because the bolts are very tight and rounding the points off would cause removal to suddenly become a PITA.

I will second that. I used them when I snapped my main shaft and they set me up with timken bearings and new syncros and a new fully splined shaft with the latest 5th gear fix. transmission is perfect. :)

And I'll third that. I only posted the link above because there's a good bit of descriptive info contained there, and I have first hand dealings with them.

Also, Standard trans. is, I believe, the ONLY source for the OEM recommended oil for the NV4500 in user amounts. I was able to buy just one gallon of the stuff from them when every other source would/could only talk about bulk amounts.

There is a double snap ring update for the 5th synchro assembly. it replaces the 1 snap ring with 2 that is a tight fit so it dont have any extra play. There is an updated countershaft. On your truck, the drive gear and the 3rd on the counter shaft are pressed on. The updated one has the entire shaft and gears milled from 1 piece. The gears on the old one are suposed to be able to be pressed off, but if you have been beating on the transmission with lots of HP or shock loads, poppin the clutch, very fast shifts, it will not press off because the gears twist on the shaft.
