What has been the experince with the HD 5spd stock transmission. I am staring to get a rattle (teeth overlay noise) at low rpm higher torque combos. Worst is 2nd gear below 1100 rpms. Evidently the stock transmission has a couple of bearings that are caged in plastic and can not handle the heat. I have been told that it is most likely the bearing between 3rd-4th gear. It still shifts fine, I plan to drive it until she's done, but not sure how long that will be. Any experience or suggestions would be appreciated.

Low RPMs + high torque = LUGGING. That combo is hard on the engine and drive line. Gear noise is normal when lugging the engine/driveline. Keep your foot out of the throttle until you're at 1500 RPM or higher. The noise is the transmission telling you it's time to downshift. jmo...

Second the previous post. I have a 96 with the NV4500 and it has made a rattling sound for almost 7 years now when lugged in 4th, 3rd, or second gears. Anything below 1500. Good news is I have 140K and have friends with similar trucks with twice the mileage on the original transmissions. It does not appear to be a problem that will generate premature trans death unless you, the driver, continue to operate in the wrong gear.

Good luck with your great ride.

Thanks for the replys, Let me re-word one thing. I don't mean to sound like I am pulling any weight at low rpms. This noise happens with no throttle in 2nd when crawling. It should not be an issue taking off in 2nd gear with 4. 10s. Now Dodge's trannies may not be able handle it because may be they can't. Anyway when pulling any wieght or working at all I keep it between 1500 and 2300. I have started faithfully using 1st gear all the time and it does make any noise so I am sure it will last a long time still. My 95 3500 makes the same kind of noises starting in 3rd and it also whines in 5th, which I think is the bottom bearing but I will drive both until I can't get into gear. Thanks again.
