i went to swift dodge here in sacramento and the service manager said that they cannot correctly calibrate the speedomoeter. he said there is 2 settings in the computer they use. he also said that they cannot set it based on revs per mile. they have always been a good dealer and been straight upfront with me never said a word about any of my upgrades except for COOL!! whats up with this?? anyone been told something similar?

speedo recal

Do a search using the keyword 'speedometer'. Set up the search to only look in '3rd gen Ram Forum, No engine/transmission discussions'. I did so and found a bunch of topics regarding recalibrating the speedo.

Basicallly they have to use their diagnostic computer, and go in through the Anti-Lock brake section, to Set Pinion Factor;(enter/change) Revolutions/mile.

Here is one such topic:

Make sure you know exactly how many 'revolutions per mile' your specific tire turns. They reset that parameter.

Correct me if I'm wrong , Autozones scanners can get to this level of programming and make the change !!!!!!!!!!!!!If one has a gps and wants to set up the revs per mile to be the most accurate (tire wear factor and pressure offset) , 601 rev is a good place to start.

I am curouis to why you would want to change it. I myself is running the 285's in return I am putting more miles on the truck they the speedo says. This if I will trade it in I will get more money for less miles. We already know if you log a lot of miles, the dealer sticks it to ya on trade-ins. If you know its off 3 miles per hour just adjust for it.

Are you really attempting to recommend and justify odometer fraud?

Thats odd for Swift Dodge, aren't those the folks that came up with the fix for right had pulling on 3rd gens? I thought it was them that figured a way to modify a 2nd gen offset ball joint to fit.

You might want to try one of the service writers, maybe they got a new service manager that doesn't know. He is wrong.

It requires the DRBIII OE factory tool to do it. The tech can select tire size or tire RPM which is more accurate.

Having the speedo off is one thing but the ODO off is a PITA I think. All your overhead and even the hand calc mpg numbers wont be right using the wrong input.

My service manager, Jeff, did it for free! Took him all of 2 minutes, if that, to make the adjustment for my 315's. This is such a simple, NON TIME CONSUMING service. I have read where some guys had to make an appointment, and then get whacked for around a $100 for a 2 minute fix.

And they, the big 3, wonder why so many people buy the imports. I used to expect service like this from my Toyota dealer, and they delivered. Just thankful I found a Dodge dealer that values their customers, Village Chrysler, Chelsea MI. Maybe it is my attitude, I don't know? I do know that they treat my wife and I incredibly well. Can't beat a small dealer, at least that is my expierience.

well guys, i want to change the speedo and od for the obvious reasons, so i can actually calculate my mileage and tell how fast im going since i bought this thing to get mileage and tow not just look purdy! well MATT i beleive you are correct about Swift i think they are the ones you are thinking about.

k well on another note does anyone know what the revs are for the Nitto grappler a/t 295/70/R17's? and do you guys think that this will be too tall will my 3. 73 and 48re? ive got the powerpup coming in a week so im thinking it shouldnt be but wanted your opinions??

According to this chart looks like it would be 606 RPM's but that doesn't jive with the other tires listed on the Nitto site.

I think that size would be fine unless you do heavy towing. I pull 6K in the mountains just fine with 285's, 3. 73's and auto trans. I use OD on the flats with speeds of 60 or higher.

I had mine done today. The revs/mile for the stock 265/70-17 is in the trucks computer as 657. I looked at one of the links listed above (the Miata one), it was wrong listing the stock tires as 628 and my 285/70-17s as 617 I think. I had the tech use the 634 from BFGs site. According to my GPS the trucks speedo was about 2 mph off. Using the BFG number of 634 the speedo now reads about 2 tenths of a mph slow, I would say that is right on in my book :) It is easy enough to change but I think I would use the tire manufacturers number if possible. Even though sizing should be standardized, I am pretty sure they vary especially on bigger truck type tires.

hi!

can you change the milage on the odometer from miles to kilometres with the same tools ? or do you have to change the whole speedo cluster , if yes does anyone know who can suply the changed over units

regards conn

Thanks Matt400,

Now maybe it can get done without an "APPOINTMENT" routine that is a long drawn out affair that takes about 2 hours out of my day  .

It really only takes five minutes or less to do. I just showed up one day and they did it on the spot. I had made an appointment earlier to have the high idle via cruise control engaged. That took them five minutes as well, so the second time for the speedo I didn't bother with the "appointment".

I tried to have Swift correct my '04 for 315's and got the same story. they are definitely my first choice for parts/service in the area, but I was forced to take it to Folsom Lake Dodge, where they charged me an hours labor.

ok so i guess my next question is has anyone found a good dealer in northern or central california that will do a tire change with the correct measurements and not charge an arm and a leg??
