As some may know, I lost 5th gear in my 98. 5 2500 4x4 on June 11, while returning from CA. My Ram had about 53,500 miles on it and I don't have an extended warranty.
Thanks to the internet I knew about the 5th gear problem.
The dealership I took it for repair had never done a 5th gear loss repair and was in no hurry to do it. About the only good thing they did was supposedly talked to DC and got me a $50 deductible cost for the repair although they kept stalling since the didn't have the special tools needed and couldn't borrow them.
I got fed up with their run around and called the DC 800 number for customer service.
I explained the run around the dealership was giving me and the DC rep put me on hold and talked to the two local dealerships.
DC authorized the other dealership to do the repair for the $50 deductible. This dealership has done numerous 5th gear repairs and the service manager claims they've never had a repair fail.
On Friday they did the repair, complete with the new revised 5th gear, and it only cost me $50 and that is with 54500 miles on my odo when I took it in to them.
If you're out of warranty and lose 5th gear call the 800 number and tell them this is a known defect and that others have had "goodwill" coverage and you would like the same.
I still think the 5th gear problem would make a good class action suit, but obviously after paying $50 for the repair I'm not personally going to pursue it.
