Hey all,

Need a little advice. I have a friend up in the Bellingham, WA area who just lost his 5th gear the other day. I gave him all the info on the problem I could, and he called a transmission shop up there who quoted him $1450 for a new fully splined shaft, new 5th gear, new bearings, and installation. The transmission shop hasn't even looked inside the transmission. This may seem like a stupid question, but isn't $1450 a bit much for this job? Does he really need a new 5th and new bearings, or will the old 5th fit on the fully splined shaft (assuming there's no damage to it when the nut came off?)

Does anyone live around that area with some knowhow?

TIA

Generally when the nut comes loose and allows the gear to slide off it has been loose long enough to wallow out the splines in the gear. It should be replaced, especially if the shaft is replaced. Don't fret that, the gear is only like $35. As for bearings, if youre replacing the shaft do the bearings too. Thay are defintly a weak link in that box.

If you bought all the parts to do that job from Standard Trans in Texas you're looking at about 5 bills for the parts. Add to that the removeal, rebuild, and install I'd say they're ballpark. Maybe a little high but ballpark.
