I just experienced the fifth gear nut problem. driving down the freeway and all of a sudden no more fifth gear. this happened on saturday night so no access to parts.

I have heard that it does not hurt anything to drive the truck in the other gears.

Is this True? i would like to drive it for a couple of days as i am using the truck for a job.

You can drive it all you want without 5th but I have heard that if you drive lots after it falls off then you may hurt the 5th gear itself. The gear is only a couple hundred bucks if you do hurt it though. On my last truck it fell off and I drove about 200 miles with it off and it didn't hurt my gear but I babied it to prevent further damage also until I could get it fixed. Myself and another TDR member(Amianthus) are going to pull my transmission apart tomorrow and do an update nut on my 5th gear because it has been jumping out of 5th gear for about a month now. Hope this helps,Chris

The second time I lost my 5th gear nut, both the gears for 5th lost teeth FYI. (they were new gears btw)

I drove mine from North Dakota to Tx with only 4 gears with no problems. Your sig doesn't show where you are from, but I'd highly recommend a new shaft and 5th gear from either Blumenthals or Standard Transmission. The Dodge fix, from what I have heard, sucks.

Thank you for the information. i will call around tomorrow for part prices and maybe a local transmission shop. i understand it is not a difficult fix but i don't really have the time. it is good to know that i have the option of using it for a few days. it might be a good time to pull the transmission and replace the clutch along with fixing the 5th gear nut. i have a 157,000 miles on the original clutch with a banks power pack installed on the motor. if there is any one who knows a good and hopefully reasonable mechanic in the Boise, Id area, let me know.

thanks

replacement nut not available

i just finished checking with 3 dodge dealerships here in Boise. The replacement nut for 5th gear is out of stock and on back order, with no tentative delivery date. one guy told me that his screen listed 897 of them on backorder at factory.

Does any one have this available or know of a source for this?

Jim,

I just had my clutch & flywheel replaced last month. Also had the fifth gear nut checked while I was there (it was OK so I left it alone). I used Glad's Repair, 4640 1/2 Adams in Garden City. They're plain-jane type people that seem to know their stuff. I've had them do stuff for me and my family for several years. Labor charges are a bit cheaper than the dealers, but still not cheap. Glad had a new fifth gear nut brought over but didn't use it. He probably returned it to his source by now.
