Since I am ordering a new truck in Jan, I was wondering if I should get the stock hitch for a 5th wheel or get an after market 5th wheel hitch.

I didn't even know there was a stock hitch available. I bought the reece 15k that swivels and when it comes out the bed odf my truck is still flat so I can use it. I've had no problems hauling my new Jayco 34 footer.

You are probably right about there being no stock hitch. That was just my assuming that the factory would have a 5th wheel hitch, no real facts. Thanks for the info on the reese hitch. All I know is that it should swivel in all 4 directions for easier hookups, but I have no idea of what hitch is best. I will be towing a 34ft kountry star, so I am still in the research mode.

Reese 15K is the right one. I buy them wholesale if you need some help. We also install them. Do Not Weld!!!!!

I highly recommend getting the factory tow package for the wiring if anything.

By all means get the Trailer Towing package. You will need the wiring and Brake Control no matter what you pull. And you will always be able to hook up the utility trailer for a quick trip to the dump on the weekend or your buddys Boat Trailer to go fishing. You will not regret having the capability. Thanks, I will order the towing package, and will also contact Barry about the reese hitch. Granbury is not that far from dallas. One question though, does this reese hitch swivel in all four directions?

I had a Reese 20k swivel hitch in my old truck. While it worked fine and I didn't have any real problems with it I decided to go with a B&W Turnover Ball Hitch with a fifth-wheel hitch on my new truck.

You can see pictures of it at http://www.dodge-diesel.com/static/b+w.html

I like the fact that it installs without having to drill holes in the frame and leaves a perfectly flat bed when removed and provides an attachment for a goose neck trailer too.

But, if anyone out there wants a good deal on a year-old 20k Reese (with new mounting rails) let me know. I'm hauling it to my folks place in Joplin, Missouri next week so if you're in that area and want a look let me know.

The manufacturer's web site has pretty complete info including downloadable installation instructions and lots of pictures: http://www.turnoverball.com/

The price I paid for all the parts was around $850. Not cheap but not that much more than the 20k Reese I had. I installed it myself in several hours. The only pain came from drilling a 4" hole in the bed (measure carefully) and holding all the heavy parts above my head while bolting 'em together.

If you have factory overload springs (like I did) you need to cut about 2" off the tail end of the frame-mounted side plates. A plasma cutter is the prefered tool for cutting the 1/4" thick steel but I made due with a jig saw, some cutting oil, and about six blades.

So far I've only pulled our 14k trailer about 60 miles round trip to dump it's tanks to prepare for winter. It towed just fine--this hitch didn't seem to "clank" as much as the old Reese but being a different truck and all it's hard to make a direct comparison.

I gave away my single pivot 14k (major headache) and found a used 15k for $150. I think the 15k is the cheapest 2 pivot 5th wh. . I like it fine! Drive around to the RV dealers and go to their shops - that's how found mine.

I have a fifth wheel similar to the Reese 15K. Mine is made by CP Industries. Its the pivoting style plate. What I like about it is that it doesn't clank around when the trailer is not connected. Unlike my dad Reese 15K.

It is a fact that the reece 15k clanks around in the back when not in use--I just wrap a bungie around it an no more clanking! It's not that much of a pain because I don't use my fiver that much (maybe 6 times a year).

I have B&W TurnoverBall hitch system. Recently purchased the 5th wheel portion of the hitch. Mike I was wondering how it well the fifth wheel reacts to the backing under the trailer since the hitch tilts forward. I am still looking for the right 5th wheel travet trailer.

Keeping in mind that I have only hitched up twice now with the new hitch, I have found it to not be a problem.

As the pin enters the slot the hitch aligns itself. It's hard to describe but you'll see what I mean the first time you hitch it up.
