DRV Recalls Trailers For Wheel Issue

New truck last year 2010 2500 Mega Frt GAWR 5500 Rear GAWR 6010 GVWR9600 GCWR 25,400 Rear hitch rated at 12,500 What numbers are the best to use in choosing 5th wheel or TT toyhauler. Have been looking at keystone Fuzion 295 2011 Hitch weight 1280 Ship wt. 7,288 carry cap. 4,155or the forest river 29ckv Hitch weight 1304 Ship wt 7329 and GVWR 11464 and Carry cap 4135 these are both TT's Have not been able to find a 5th wheel toyhauler other than a Thor 35 footer but belive it to be to larger for the 2500. Have no spec on it yet. Also with a tow behind of the size above would you reccomend a equalizer hitch.

A TT of that size an equalizer hitch is a must. I don't know about Fifth Wheels as I only pull My TT. H Barlow would be able to give you an answer on Fifth Wheels.

I agree that most fifth wheel travel trailers will be too heavy for your truck. You can easily determine your own safe towing limits by weighing your truck fully loaded with passengers, fuel, tools, etc. Weigh each axle and total truck then subtract rear axle weight from rear axle rated weight to determine maximum allowable trailer tongue weight.

None of trailer weight figures you posted matter. What you want to know is trailer GVWR then multiply by 12% to estimate real life tongue weight. Compare it to allowable tongue weight above.

A good brand name weight distributing hitch AND sway control will be critical with a long, heavy, and rear heavy toy hauler. I recommend a Reese dual cam because it provides both weight distribution AND sway control.

Last but very important is a high quality synchronized and modulated trailer brake controller. There are only two brands to choose from: BrakeSmart or MaxBrake. All others are poor and cheap pretenders. Don't listen to a lying RV salesman who tries to sell you a cheap substitute. You can buy a MaxBrake from Southwest Wheel Company Steel and Aluminum Truck Wheels.

When considering a 5th wheel or a travel trailer I highly recommend you look them up on RV Consumer Group. Better yet, purchase a copy. The two brands you mentioned are low end quality. Consider a higher end quality, even if it cost you a little more money. Purchasing a higher end quality trailer maybe cheaper in the long run. RV Consumer Group

EricBu12 is right, I have had my Hensley hitch since 1998 & I would never be with out it again. Never have had any problems with it at all. Good Company to work with.

Hensley alternative

the best TT hitch is the hensley hitch.

Trailer Sway Control by Hensley

This is a demonstration video for it.

Just for information, there is now an alternative hitch on the market - the ProPride 3P - also designed by Jim Hensley. Works the same way; just a newer model.

Free market competition - good for all, right?

Hope this helps,

I have a 07 one tone dually. i pull a 35 foot keystone fuzion fifthwheel toyhauler. i installed the max break controller this summer. it is worth every single penny. its amazing how smooth and much better the breaking is. extremly easy to install. i love the fuzion. its wonderful

That pro pride 3P looks neat. still pretty expensive... probably made for smaller trailers. The regular one is made for up to 15K. didn't see a rating for the 3p. . has 2000# spring bars though.
