Any of you guys changed out your tailgates to the 5th Wheel louvered type? If so, which one did you get and why? I have the back-up camera and electric tailgate lock on mine and wondering if they make one of the louvered ones with these options? Also, are they expensive?

Thanks ahead of time, Scott

On a similar note, a friend removed his '16 tailgate for his slidein and he said it was a pain to remove the tailgate, compared to his second gen. I don't recall what he said was "a pain" as this was back in January and I have a bad memory... but figured I'd throw that out there as a heads up for when/if you swap yours out.

My 03 was pretty easy but the 16 is physically a little harder and u have to disconnect the wiring harness plug and install the cap.
I wrapped mine up and stored it in a safe place, would hate to see the price of a new one.
I plan to get a 5vr gate.

I guess I'm shaking my head on this one. I've been towing 5th wheels with Ram 3500 duallies for 20 years and have never owned a louvered 5th wheel tailgate. I've never seen the need for one, and I've never damaged one of our stock tailgates. To each his own, I suppose.....

Ditto to what Rusty said.

I've towed 5th wheels since 1988 with the stock tailgate and never damaged one either.

I used to be able to say that, until my routine was interupted while unhooking my GN. I turned my tailgate into a large white hunk of scrap.

I have been towing 5th wheels for 20+ years and thought about having a louvered tailgate years ago but with being in construction I stuck to the regular tailgate. Never a problem, fingers crossed!

On my last truck/5th Wheel combination, the 5th wheel pin box was straight down so the tailgate would hit the trailer before the pin would seat in the hitch so i used the louvered tailgate for easier hitching. My new setup has the pin box that extends to help with short bed applications so my long bed allows me to hitch up with the tailgate down.

Just depends on the application and preference

Just my 2 cents...:)

I removed my tailgate when the truck had about 100 miles on it and it has been propped against the garage wall ever since. Somewhere around 120,000 miles I bought and installed a rear mounted tool box. No need for a tailgate of any kind, IMO. I certainly wouldn't install a flimsy aluminum or plastic louvered gate.

Here is my solution, complete with replacement park view camera mounted in V-Box. SNOKING
