5th wheel vs 31 ft. M/H ?

Hi all,this a VERY cool forum!!



I'd like to hear your opinions and experiences on towing a 5th wheel Toyhauler compared to a class A Motorhome and boat or trailer.

Does a toyhauler that carries a sandrail tow better with CTD then a M/H or is also a pain to drive?



It also seems like it may be less maintenance without the M/H engine,trans etc to deal with.



I'm going to order a 2004 CTD as a daily driver ,but which one (LWB or SWB) depends on the following scenarios.



I currently have a 31' M/H,but don't like the way it handles. We tow the boat in the summer,and dirtbikes/quads in winter and I "want" a sandrail in the near future. In the summer I could keep boat and or toyhauler at the river in storage,and drive CTD w/o towing for the 270 mile trip each way. And in the winter,just hook up toyhauler and go.

I have owned a motor home and I have owned 3 5ers. The 5er is best for me but may not be best for you. I fish, so when we had the MH we had to disconnect the utilities, put every thing away, hook up the trailer, launch the boat, disconnect the trailer, hook up the elec (min). In Tx we can double tow, so we drag both trailers to the lake, drop the boat trailer, park the 5er and disconnect, then hook the boat to the PU. Since it is a hassle (from what I have read) to double trailer in Ca I'm thinking a MH is what you would be happier with.

Back when I was doing the Buggie thing I had a 34' 5th wheel Toy hauler type trailer. I loved towing that thing (except on hills) and i had a 75 Ford 3/4 ton 4x4 with a warmed up 460 in it. When my buddies were all over the road in the wind going to or from Glamis my 5th wheel was very steady and easy to keep under control. The only postive side of a motor home to me is being able to tow a boat and have a RV too. If you have kids its easier to haul them in a motor home too, otherwise a 5th wheel is super.

I have a 30' fiver with a 3/4 ton Cummins, and I love it. The cost and maintanance of the MH made the 5ver a no brainer. We like to travel to a location, drop the 5ver and go. The insurance is WAY cheaper, and I get to drive the cummins all the time

I bought a higher end 5ver and ordered the wistles and bells that made it perfect. The MH is easier when you get to the camp site, but a real pain to move. If you tow a toad, you have just doubled the maintanance and insurance. What ever you decide, just get out there and see America!!! Sarge

I always wanted a motorhome, but considering that the motorhome would mostly just sit in the yard, and I would still have to have a truck, I went the CD and 5w route. My CTD and 5w cost no more than a low end diesel motor home and I have a truck to use every day. Since using the truck and trailer I have no more desire for a motorhome. It jusy simply works for me.

Fifth wheel is for on

I've owned 2 motorhomes (1 Class C and 1 Class A) and two fifth wheels (86 Royals International 38ft and an 93 Royals International 40ft Homestead). I've found that fifth wheels offer more closet space and storage than motorhomes.
