Should I buy this......

Hey guys, got a friend who might pick up a Chevy dually with a 6. 2 diesel. Just wondering if any of you have any comments/advice about this engine. What to look for as far as usual problems it may have been plagued with. What was it's weak points and strengths? Thanks for any info... .....

I own one, can't say I am proud to, but it runs pretty well. I personally would check to see if it had/has EGR and if it does get rid of it as soon as possible. There is a Not EGR intake manifold that makes worlds of difference as to how the engine runs, power and sound. Mine is an 82 and "had" egr when I got the truck it couldn't get out of its own way going down hill, but with some TLC it has come to life and runs pretty well. The 6. 2 will never do the work that a stock 5. 9 will do but can get by for some time. What kinda of shape is the truck in?? Don't pay to much for it!!

Not sure on most of the details as far as condition, probably find out tomorrow, I think he said it's a 90, with like 50,000 miles. I'll mention the egr thing to him, thanks for the advice... ... ...

Check the harmonic balancer, if the rubber bonding between the outer and inner sections is chipped, cracked or perished, crankshaft failure will be imminent if not replaced asap.

Unfortunately, it will be hard to check the main bearing webs in the block for cracks, which were common on the later low nickel content blocks, without dropping the oil pan, however, 6. 2Ls have run for over 100K with those cracks, so it's not too worrying.

The inj. pumps are usually worn out at 100K and the injectors are best replaced between 50-75K.

The timing chain is a major PIA and causes pump/cam timing and power issues. Replace it at 100K with dual idler timing gears.

A Banks or ATS turbo is recommended for getting practical power from this engine, along with a DB2-4911 pump and 6. 5LTD injectors.

Mine had over 270K on it and it was turboed at 240K without problems. I ended up fitting it with a Banks Ford 7. 3L MHI TE06H turbo and was very pleased with the power. However, I recognized the 6. 2L or even the 6. 5L wasn't going to be up to reliably putting out 400HP at wheels, so I sold the drivetrain and have commenced a 6Bt conversion.

I put 250k miles on a 6. 2 and it is still going strong, sold it and got a CTD. Had a cracked piston skirt at 200 and put 3 pumps on it, last one being the best. Mine was an EGR motor but it is easy to get rid of, just change out the intake, junk yard $35. It is a light duty motor but was good to me,regular maintanance probably helped. My original injectors went 200, then I put in a new set of Bosch. Parts aren't that expensive. Good Luck

Thanks for the great info guys, I will pass it on, maybe it will help/hurt his decision, but at least he'll have some good info. Found out it's a 91 one ton.

If it runs good don't buy it. Somethings about to go wrong.

Thats the best advice I've heard on buying either the 6. 2s or 6. 5s

Geez, you're gonna have to do an intervention on this guy - he definitley needs help selecting a truck.

My two cents on the 6. 2 are that it's pretty gutless as far as towing goes but it's pretty long-winded without a load. Pretty good top-end compared to the 6. 5. A buddy of mine has one in a '97 Chevy dually and it's the third Chevy diesel he's had in the truck. It started with a 6. 5 and was replaced with another 6. 5 and after that one went he put a 6. 2 in it. It's only got 125,000 miles on it too so he hasn't had very good luck. He's got his turbo supposedly turned way up too but it only puts out about 13 pounds - go figure.

I'm glad you're buddy didn't get the 6. 2 but a 454 is probably just as bad. Gonna have to convince him to get a Cummins.

I have a lot of experience with the 6. 2L and I agree that they're gutless in stock form. However, I decided to bomb mine and ended up with a fun truck.

I used a Ford 7. 3L Banks Sidewinder MHI w/g turbo, Chevy 6. 2L Banks Sidewinder parts, 3" exhaust from downpipe to tail, DB2-4911 pump turned up to 76mm3/stroke @ 2000 WOT, 6. 5LTD injectors set to 2100psi. This was fitted into an M1028 (Chevy K30 on steroids) which has a 30% stronger frame, D60 with Dana LSD full float axle in front, 14 bolt corporate detroit locker full float in the rear with 9400lb GVW. I dropped in a dragster 700R4 transmission and 1700rpm HD stall convertor.

0-60mph came in just 8. 8 seconds, which isn't half bad for a 6. 2L weighing 5100lbs.

However, I want more power, so I sold my engine and drivetrain to a fellow enthusiast who's now able to climb steep hills at illegal speeds :D , and I'm installing a bombed 6BT.

6.2 WEAK POINTS

Look for, or signs of cracked head(s). Oil in water/water in oil- if it has any blow by (check oil filler cap for signs of condensation or water oil residue on bottom of cap).

I had an 84 chev - 340k and was still going - traded on a Cummins
