You guys are going to love this. One of our shop trucks is a F450 6. 4L full load at $70K and lately it has been leaving puddles on the ground like a new puppie. We checked the oil and it was slightly high by a litre. Now this engine isn't known for great mileage but the last tank of fuel it went 60 miles and the fuel light came on. Let's see... 1. 5 mpg can't be good but we only lease the truck so off it went to the Ford dealership.

This is were it gets good. The dealer calls and says, you must have filled the oil up too high, as it has 11 litres too much. We say, I think you have a bigger problem than just a oil leak. So they drop the oil and as we suspected, they find lots of fuel in the oil.

Now this is were it gets great. Ford phones their tech line and says they found fuel in the oil. Ford says, "That is ok, as long as it isn't more than 1" of total volume of oil in the pan"... ... WTF... ... They can't be serious. They told the service manager to drop the pan and put the contaminated oil back into the pan and let sit over night, than measure it to see if it is under or over 1" of fuel per volume of pan. Can you believe Ford thinks it's normal to have raw fuel in the oil !!!!!!!!!#@$%! Chances are they are going to say, it's good to go and we will have to drive it til it calfs, which can't be long.

I forsee another 6. 0L engine in Fords hand.

maybe thats the reason why the guys on the dieselstop.com are hearing a knocking sound starting after 3-4k miles. main bearings going out:{

This doesn't make any sense.

The sump capacity on the 6. 4l engine is 15 quarts (14. 2l). If it were 11 liters overfull, that's a total of 25. 2l of fluid in the sump (70% overfill).

Now, unless the dimensions on the 6. 4l oil pan are something like 40"x40"x1", there is no way that putting that much fluid is going to be lessthan 1" higher surface level in the pan.

So what the heck is Ford and the dealership thinking? I don't think you're being given the whole story...

Can there be any doubt that overfilling a sump by 70% is going to be WAY more than 1" overfull?

The other day I had the oppurtunity to follow two f-450's hauling some mini excavators up a decent grade. After a minute or so my cab was filled up with raw diesel smell and both of the trucks were spewing out white smoke. I was so glad to see a passing zone after a couple of miles.

Ford better put the rumored new in-house diesel engine program into the emergency mode.

Even the massive advertising (propaganda) program may not be enough to save them if this is the direction the 6. 4 is going.

Ford has narrowed it down to the high pressure pump, but seeing as it is internal, any leak will fill the crankcase with fuel. Engineers thought that the best place to hide the pump for less noise was in the engine. Like anything else, any work on the engine will require the cab to come off. They should have designed the truck with quick connects so you can get the cab off as fast as a new brides pajama's, because you are bound to be needing to get it on and off about as much. :-laf

Just got back from the Furd Dealer after picking up my Ex for routine service.

All I can say is "Unbelievable".

Not a small dealership. . rather large by NJ standards.

The service lot & all parking for that matter is FULL of 6. 0's & 6. 4's.

SM tells me they are currently telling truck owners "end of April" before they can even come in.

They are there for either Injectors issues, Head Gaskets, turbos or oil leaks (or all of the above).

SM is very upset with Ford, as he claim he is losing money on every Job. He says turbo failures dont allow for R&R-Furd is just sending internals.

One school bus has been there since Nov. P'ups, Service Trucks, Wreckers, ambulances, the 1 Bus, they were everywhere.

I cant even begin to think what my temper would have me do if I was in that position.

So-one more time from the cheap seats... Damn glad I dropped the Blue Oval allegience back in 03... and lucky my work truck is a 7. 3.

Side note- My Ex qualified for a recall. Seems Furd is stepping up to pay for all those bad CPS's. SO they put a new one in today. Now, If I can just get reimbursed for my 500$ side-of-the-road fiasco 15 months ago.....
