Intesting Game

The 6. 5 bore size and the available projectiles have interested me for a long time. However short barrel life has prevented me from building a rifle. Recently, five new rounds have surfaced and have proven themselves as potential cartridges for sport, hunting, tactical and serious target shooting. They are; 6. 5X284, . 260 Remington, 6. 5 Grendel(AR-15 platform), 6. 5 Creedmoor and 6. 5X47 Lapua. I am looking at the 6. 5 Creedmoor as the round for a project rifle in the years to come. Long projected barrel life, accuracy and supersonic capability past 1000 yards (necessary for long range target shooting). Have to start saving my pennies for a reamer, barrel blank, dies and bullets. Just got the brassOo.

My favorite rifle used to be the . 250 Savage on a bolt action. This 6. 5 Creedmoor round is the same basic case with a better ballanced bore/bullet combination. A Ruger #1 single shot in this configuration, would be an excellent hunting rifle for the well aimed "one shot-one kill" on game.

Check out this article, a good read;6. 5mm Shootout: . 260 Remington vs. 6. 5x47 Lapua vs. 6. 5 Creedmoor GregH

i have always liked the 264 caliber in the 1960' and 1970's you had a choice of one source in 120 or 140 grain bullets in the last five years i have seen more weights and suppliers than in the 40 years previous. it got a bad rep when the 264 winchester magnum was promoted as the flattest shooting long range elk gun, and then to make it worse they shortened the barrel down from the 26" so it burned the throat up just to blow the gas out the barrel before it could get the velocity up the only one of the listed i have not tried is the 6. 5x47 . i am playing with the 6. 5 grendel in a ar15 with a 26"pac-nor barrel

I shoot a 6. 5x55 Swede. The 6. 5's are nice because they have such a good BC. Long bullets. And it is nice to see more selection for the reloader.

If I could ever get enough money together, I'd love a Creedmoor in the AR platform.

About 2 years back Sierra discontinued the 155 gr Matchking 6. 5 bullet.

I wish I bought all they had. They were $59. 99/500. :{:{

The AR-10 is available in 6. 5 Creedmoor! Please See;

DPMS: AR-15 Rifles, Parts and Accessories.

If I remember correctly? The Sierra 155, 6. 5 bullet required a 1-7" twist to stabilize it. Some of the newer VLD designs have better flight characteristics and use a standard 1-8" twist.

As CKelly1 mentioned, the . 264 Winchester was a barrel burner, but for the reason it was just to much powder funneled down that little bore. That case is the same as the 7MM Remington Magnum and the . 338 Winchester Magnum!

The 6. 5X284 will equal the performance of the . 264 Winchester with considerably less powder. The 6. 5X284 seems to average about 1200-1300 rounds, barrel life, that is adequate for a once a year hunting rifle, but a 6. 5X284 target rifle will cost you one or two barrels a season, easy! GregH

patriot you are correct , the shorter fatter cases are a lot more efficient and increase barrel life considerably i like the 6. 5 x 284 and 142 grain bullets mine is on a 700 with a 27" barrel
