I have been planning to purchase and install a GDP 2 micron filter kit to augment the filtration on my 2005 CTD. After reading the article on page 50 of the new TDR #64, I am wondering if it would be possible and not TOO hard to retrofit the newer style 6. 7 fuel filter housing that fits the excellent fleetguard Stratapore filter/separator in place of the oem fuel filter hoousing on a 3rd gen 5. 9.

Specifically, I am wondering if the fuel filter location on the 6. 7 and 5. 9 engines is the same and ALSO if the fuel line connections to the filter housing are roughly the same.

ALSO wondering what the physical diminesions of the 6. 7 filter housing are.

If all of the above match up or are reasonably adaptable, then it seems that an oem solution to better filtration (5 micron) and water separation is available for the 3rd gen 5. 9 CTD.

Any ideas or info?? TIA

I don't know if it's really worth it to go from a 7 micron down to a 5 micron especially with the stock intank pump. I would opt for the aftermarket fuel pump and a 2 micron.

C. Fish,

I think the best 'cost effictive' arrangement is to keep the stock 5. 9 10 mu filter/water separator and add the GDP 2 mu as a secondary filter. The 10 mu is a very good water separator, I'm told better than the 7 mu or 5 mu (water emulsifies when forced thru the finer filters), and GDP recommends changing the 2 mu fiter at every 3rd change of the stock filter. Just my 2 cents... .

It would probably be easier and cheaper just to go with the GDP kit. But if all you want is 5um filtration then just add a Baldwin PF7977 to your OE filter bowl, its 5um (which actually is all the GDP is as well. . in absolute terms).

Personally I run 3 fuel filters on my OE LP. I have a Baldwin BF1212 (20um, 95% f/w sep) then the OE filter bowl with a Baldwin PF7977 (5um, 95% f/w sep) then a GDP big line kit with a Cat 1R-0750 (true 2um). . With stock fueling I have yet to see below 5psi of fuel pressure, even towing.

I run the Baldwin right now in the oem location, and plan on adding the GDP kit, perhaps with a CAT filter, but the article in TDR made the Fleetguard 5 mic stratapore filter sound pretty darn good in terms of water separation AND fuel filtration, so I was just wondering about the plausabiliy of swapping one into my truck. I've emailed both Jim Andersen and Joe Donnelly at TDR, and both were interested in the idea, but also though it likely that the Fass or GDP might well be a less expensive way to go. Still, Jim is goin to look into it when he gets a 6. 7 and a 5. 9 CTD next to each other some time in June. He'll get back to me and then I'll get back to you guys. Thanks for the responses so far!!!

I still think its more effort than its worth. The Baldwin is rated at 95% or more fuel/water separation and is 5um. . just like the fleetguard. I doubt you want gain anything other than running a fleetguard filter. FASS will not get you any better fuel/water sep than the Baldwin, actually will get you less.
