wes... . were you taught like I was that a motor is an electric motor, and engine is a gasoline, diesel, natural gas, etc power device.....

gas means natural gas or propane in the vapor state, and gasoline is correct term for automobile fuel...

gasoline is never sucked down a carb. but the difference in pressures draws the gasoline through the fuel circuits to be vaporized as it moves into the engine. .

I had a very aggressive first year fuels instructor that almost made us stand in the corner of the class room for one of those foolish mistakes... he drummed it in so well that today..... 36 years later I still use the right terms.....

Your instructor sounds like my late father! I thank him nearly every day for the things he taught me, but at the time I didn't understand why some of it was that important. :)

we have been through this before along time ago here is the definition again. you can use either interchangibly: mo·tor (mō'tər)

n.

Something, such as a machine or an engine, that produces or imparts motion.

A device that converts any form of energy into mechanical energy, especially an internal-combustion engine or an arrangement of coils and magnets that converts electric current into mechanical power.

A motor vehicle, especially an automobile: “It was a night of lovers. All along the highway … motors were parked and dim figures were clasped in revery” (Sinclair Lewis).

:-{} :-laf

you say adjustable wrench, I say crescent

you say adjustable locking pliers, I say vise-grips

adjustable wrench, crescent

adjustable locking pliers, vise grips

let's call the whole thing off

The mechanical engineering profs in college were absolutely adamant about the difference between motors and engines as well, so I agree, it's a diesel engine. The definition stumbles somewhat, however, when one considers a steam engine versus a hydraulic or air motor.

Vrey intriguing thread!

I learned as much from reading this thread as I did earlier today in the bathroom stall at work while reading a tattered old copy of People magazine!
