6.7 Tailpipe (& Muffler) = Big $$$

The '08 is at a dealer having warranty and recall work performed. I knew the tailpipe was rusted out (at only 82k miles), so I asked the dealer to take a look at replacing it.



Dealer said that the tailpipe and muffler must be replaced as a system, $780 parts and labor, and, as you might expect, that service is not covered by warranty. My answer was of course, no.



Next phone call was to my local trusty NAPA counterman. Lots of grinding on the other hand, then his response, they don't have a source for replacement 6. 7 tailpipe (and muffler) systems yet. So the dealer got to do the work after all... and I am $780 poorer.

Any aftermarket truck muffler with the proper diameter inlet and outlet available from an independent muffler shop along with a shop bent tailpipe would be acceptable and a lot cheaper.

You are likely right Harvey, I was thinking about that this morning. Maybe I should have retrieved the truck and taken it to a shop that custom bends and fabricates exhaust piping.



I guess this is my penalty for quickly piling up miles on an early model year truck. You get to do things like the 67500 service and exhaust systems replacement before a more affordable aftermarket parts biz is up to speed.

That is what I was hoping, but a closer examination of that emissions warranty, and the separately purchased 100k extended warranty, appear to indicate otherwise. It may be time to write Chrysler another letter.



There is no excuse for this tailpipe to rust out so quickly. The last few winters really haven't been that bad, not nearly as much ice removal happening on the roads, and much of what was occurring used new technology like beet juice brine. (I hail from upstate NY, my parent's cars were always heavily rust damaged. My dad taught me the essential skills of Bondo, sheet metal, pop rivet, and tar application. )

I doubt you're going to find an aftermarket truck muffler to replace the tiny muffler on the 6. 7. Perhaps an aftermarket SS pipe could have been modded/lengthened to fit with the elimination of the muffler, which you really don't need anyway. The new C&C trucks don't even have mufflers any more.

A very good idea, one that hopefully will benefit other TDR members who find this thread in the future. Indeed that muffler is small, makes you wonder just how much attenuation it has, maybe you could do without it. I love how quiet this truck is though, so it would be a shame to diminish that.



A question came to mind as I wrote this reply, does the muffler also serve any sort of spark arresting function during regens?

Retrieved the truck this afternoon, and here is the exhaust system work breakdown:



Extension Pipe, 52121427-AC $90. 70

Muffler, 52121428-AD $282. 00

Tailpipe, 52121429-AD $219. 00



Labor $180. 00



I was surprised that I needed the muffler too, but then I remembered what I went through a few years ago when I replaced the tailpipe on the '91. Had to fabricate a new muffler output sleeve using a piece of straight tube and my welder. Likely some portion of the muffler on the '08 was shot as well, and I just hadn't noticed it.



Yes, the prices are full list, and I now can see (as can future readers of this thread), that these Mopar only parts may be available elsewhere somewhat cheaper. I can't begrudge the dealer from making a living though. Costs money to keep the lights on.



In any event, so far I am pretty happy with this new dealer. The technician appeared to be very thorough with this and my other warranty and recall work, the paperwork is detailed, and the communication was good. I will be a repeat customer.

When mine goes out, I'll get a good straight muffler and good routing. An aluminized 4" filter back is just over $200 at Genos... Find an Allied truck Muffler and Done.

I live in salt belt too and so far after 2 1/2 years and 28K it is not too bad .

I live in the SLC area too and now have just under 50k miles and my exhaust system still looks brand new.

If that's the new muffler you have pictured, I'd be asking about that surface rust that's right around the outlet. For that kind of money, I wouldn't be happy with that.

Although connected to the emissions, everything after the cat (at least on the 5. 9, haven't looked at the 6. 7 to know where everything is), is not considered under the emissions warranty. I tried that route when mine rusted completely through after the muffler in 4 years. I did have short commutes in the winter, 12 miles, so I am sure things never heated up enough to burn away the condensation. I have since gone with an MBRP stainless system and other than the dreaded drone, it hasn't given me any quality type problems.

I replace my exhaust on the 07. 5 6. 7 with a SS MBRP system with out a muffler. I did not notice much if any difference in exhaust tone or a drone. The stock muffler is a staight flow muffler and behind the cat and DPF, I do not feel it does much. The MBRP system was just under $300.

The only way to get sound or results from the 6. 7's is Turbo back exhaust.
