If you had a choice of an 2007 brandnew with the 6. 7 vs a 2007 with 16,000 miles and the 5. 9, and the new 2007 was $3500 more than the used 2007 and everything else being equal, which would you choose and WHY?

Thanks

I test drove a 6. 7 and decided to order one, and sell my 06 before everybody figures out that the 6. 7 is awesome and the 5. 9's devalue.

That would depend if it was an auto or manual. I would buy the 5. 9 if it had a G56, I don't like the 48rfe or any auto for that matter. The 6. 7 is powerful and coupled to a six speed/auto could change my mind about the auto with a CTD, but the C&C I bought has a 6. 7 W/G56 and I don't regret it. I just have a mental issue with an auto behind a diesel, but the 48rfe would never convince me to go auto, no mater what make of diesel engine was in front of it. The reason I had to purchase a 6. 7, was because the 07 C&C did not have a 5. 9 available. This is just my opinion and you should have good luck with a 48rfe, but you will limit your HP upgrades, as the 5. 9 has more options for increasing HP & torque except with a stock 48rfe.

5. 9 without a doubt. The 5. 9 is more simple in every respect (I have both). No dpf, no special fuel requirements, more knowledgable dealer base, etc. Aside from that, I cannot stand the exhaust smell of the 6. 7.

I am at the same juncture you are -- i want a newer truck , but i am afraid of problems with the new emission system on the 6. 7 ... ... . i am leaning towards the 5. 9 engine. If you can wait a year or two, maybe the "bugs" will be worked out of the 6. 7 ??

A funny story about the exhaust smell, I was standing in a service bay when a service writer panicked claiming there was something burning in a 6. 7 3500 truck that was idling near me when he walked up to it, and then called over the other techs to help him until I told him that is a normal smell with the new DPF on them. It kind of gives an example of service personnel not knowing these new trucks with all the smog crap on them.

Fat chance of that happening... 5. 9s are gonna increase in value. Granted, the 6. 7 is awesome, but it still aint a 5. 9.

Honestly, Id have to go with the 5. 9...

... after 5 5. 9's... i opted for the 6. 7... with the 48RFE... my '01 was an ETH/DEE,which served me well for 236k miles, however,i'm very pleased with the power and performance of the engine and transmission combo.

my truck is an '08,so perhaps that is the reason i'm not having the "growing pains" of some of the earlier trucks... . all in all,i'm happy with my truck... . tom;)

Wouldn't that be a 68rfe with the 6. 7?

That's the attitude I'm banking on. I know around here everybody is afraid of the new engine with all the emissions stuff. They already have what you need to take it all off, so what's the big deal?

RVTRKN, I know what you're saying. I can't find the words to explain specifically what the 6. 7 exhaust smells like (aside from a very un-natural burning smell). I try not to let my 6. 7 idle nearby outside my shop with the bay door open, because it will make the whole building smell terrible inside!

Had a new 5. 9 2500 with auto trans in 2002. Wonderful truck. Drove it 50,000 miles. Sold it in 2004 and bought my wife a VW Passat TDI. We bought a 2008 2500 auto trans 6. 7 in August. We love the truck. It doesn't go as far on a gallon of diesel, but then that was never a concern of ours. It's a truck. We bought it to haul our boat around. If we don't like it we will trade it for a Chevy, or a Toyota. We never had much luck with Fords.

I've sampled almost all of'em.

I've owned a 1998 RAM 2500 Regular Cab 4x4 12V & NV4500.

I've owned a 2000 RAM 2500 Quad Cab 4x4 24V & 47RE.

I've owned a 2003 RAM 2500 Quad Cab 4x4 24V HPCR & NV5600 (305*555).

My current truck is what you see in the signature.

Short of one EGR valve and two reflashes, my 2007. 5 RAM 3500 has been as good or better than any of the previous trucks I've owned so far. The power in these 6. 7L's are great in stock form; the 68RFE and exhaust brake are awesome as well. They start well when cold, produce cabin heat quicker, and are about equal in ease of maintenance as the 5. 9L's. After a few miles (10. 5k) of the 68RFE, I certainly do not miss my NV5600... ... and the 2003 RAM was some tough shoes to fill.

Seems as if people on this board (and others) tend to voice more complaints than praises.

Maybe some of us should start a "Are you happy with your 6. 7L ?" thread. :-laf

Did they change the top gear in the G56 from the earlier production? What is the final gear ratio now, compared to the nv5600?

Yes, I cant tell you what it is but my 5. 9 2150 RPM at 70MPH & my 6. 7 2150 RPM at 70 MPH. There is a change just don't know when.

I hug my wife and "we" in my britches every time I am sailing down the interstate and look down at the speed O meter and see my RPMs below 2k doing 70mpg. :-laf with my 4. 10sOo.

Just curious if the 6. 7 comes with a bigger radiator, and/or more oil capacity? How about transmission input shaft size? Still 1-3/8", or bigger. . I ask these questions because they are basic factors in the capabilities of the rig to perform heavy work.
