Just wondering if anyone has any mileage figures for the the 6. 7L yet: loaded, unloaded, weight of load, distance, MPG.

My truck went into service on Nov. 21, and now has over 5600 miles on it. The mileage is averaging around 10 mpg. The truck weighs 8700 lbs and has a trailer behind it that weighs 7600 lbs empty. It is pulling loads (gross wt) up to 24000 lbs. The trips have been as short as 60 miles and as long as 1100 miles and everything in between. I have not run at all without the trailer, so I can't say what kind of mileage it would get like that. From tank to tank it is running from a low of 8. 5 to a high of 10. 4. The 8. 5 was on a high, heavy load, 24k for a distance of a little over 300 miles and the 10. 4 was on a light load, 4000 lbs on the trailer, for 1100 miles. The truck isn't broken in yet, so it should get better. As a comparison, my 03 averaged 11. 3 over a 10,000 mile period hauling the same trailer and same type of loads. It was a 03 HO with a 6 speed NV 5600 and 3. 73 gears, the new truck is with the 6. 7 engine, Aisin transmission and 4. 10 gears.

I'll keep up with how the truck is holding up and how the mileage is doing and will be posting about it at least once a month, more if needed or if anyone has some questions about it.

How does it tow compared to the 03?

Just as well as the 03. It is different because of the transmission. This transmission has a lot of low end, (low speed) power, getting started takes no effort at all. It is really nice when you are heavy and starting up a hill. The rpm when in 6th is the same as the rpm of the 5600 when it is in 6th. About 1950 at 69-70 mph. I don't speed, my normal speed is between 65-70 and the truck feels comfortable there. If you put it into tow/haul the transmission will be in 5th and the rpm will be a little over 2300.

To answer your question about how it tows as compared to the 03, I'd have to say about the same, you just don't have to shift gears. The transmission really feels solid. One more thing, don't even think about getting one without the exhaust brake. It is well worth the price.

EB, correct me if I'm wrong, but that's pretty good mileage to start with: 10. 4 on an unbroken-in 2007 vs 11. 3 on the broken-in (?) 2003.

Based on your reader's rig, your 2003 had a 3. 73 rear, as compared to a 4. 10 on the 2007.

Also, your 2007 is a 4x4, whereas your 2003 was a 4x2 .

My thought is that the 6. 7, though a larger engine, will probably edge out the 5. 9 auto mileage wise, due to the new 6-speed auto.

I'm not sure if the same could be said of 6. 7 with a manual trans, though. It will be interesting to see.

Thanks, again

I don't have any problems with the mileage. The run I got 10. 4 on was nearly all interstate hwy driving, there probably weren't 10 stop lights on the whole trip. I just put it on cruise and steered. A lot of these people with the high mileage claims, well, lets just say I've never been able to do it. Maybe a tandem axle, dual wheeled trailer just pulls heavier than some of the other types do. I averaged between 11-11. 5 over several hundred thousand miles with that truck. It never varied, always between 11 & 11. 5 mpg.

By the way, my 2007 is not a 4x4.

I average between 11. 5 and 12. 5 towing this trailer at 68-70MPH. If I slow down 5MPH that number jumps 1MPG easy. It's not too heavy, ~6K approx.

I've been waiting to hear about mileage. Currently I have a 99 3500 4x4 C&C with auto and 4. 10's and get 11. 5 to 11. 9 towing a 10,800# horse trailer. I get consistent mid 13's empty. So it sounds as though it is going to be a loss of about 1 mpg for me and with the huge jump in power I'll experience that 1 to 2 mpg is more than acceptable to me.

Good heavens, I get 15. 5 - 15. 9mpg every time with my P7100 welding rig, and its no lightweight. I knew that the second gens got a little bit better mileage, but I didn't realize it was that much difference. Its going to hurt going to a new truck :(

This isn't what I expected for milage. My old 96 junker gets 16-17 around town with a load of tools and 35 inch tires. I expect 19- 20 mpg on a new one with stock tires. The plain old v8 gasser is looking better every day.

All my mileage is pulling a dual wheel, tandem axle trailer that weighs 7600 lbs empty. I also had a 95 1 ton Dodge that wouldn't even think about making 10 mpg pulling this same trailer. With the extra power and much better ride for about the same fuel, I'm quite happy and it will get better after it gets broken in.

Then get a gasser and be happy with it. You won't get 19-20 with any new one. You won't get that with a gasser either.

No, its a not-so areodynamic rig and weighs just shy of 11,000lbs constant. From my experience, this would be about equivalent to pulling our 6,000lb 5'th wheel with an otherwise empty 2nd gen.

I wonder what a person would get with a fully loaded 11-12,000lb gasser dually?

That's better than my empty 6800 lbs '96 does with stock 3rd Gen 265/70/17" tires.

i know someone with a dodge dually hemi. towing his 10k trailer he cant brake 6 mpg. i would never consider a gasser in a dually. their no point to it that i can see.

I have to admit that i drive like a old lady to get the 16-17 and i dont have much weight in tools 300-400 lbs. But the price of diesel is getting to me :{ . Mabey a 6. 7 and 6 speed auto will at least match my current mpg? Im tempted to order one this spring. I could never go back to a gaser after a cummins. :D
