There is no oil change schedule for the 6. 7L engine. The computer display will indicate when an oil change is required.

At 2500 miles, the computer display on my new 2007. 5 Dodge Ram said “Oil Change Required”. My first reaction was, it can’t be correct.

I called my dealer to tell them what was happening. The dealer service department agreed, it can’t be correct. They told me to reset the computer display and get my oil changed at 7,500 miles.

As a former DaimlerChrysler employee, I contacted a DC engineer involved with the 6. 7L Cummins to confirm those instructions. He said that DC thought that Cummins was adding the oil change calculation feature in 2008. Instead, it is on the 2007. 5 Rams with the 6. 7L Cummins. He told me to go ahead and have the oil changed now. The truck computer will calculate when an oil change is required based on the type of driving I have done since the last oil change. This is necessary to protect the emission equipment. He thought the oil change was indicated at 2,500 mile because the truck was new and I had towed some of those miles.

I telephoned my dealer for an appointment to change the oil. I told the write-up person what I had been told and advised him a TSB was being prepared.

So, if your 2007. 5 truck’s computer tells you it is time for an oil change, it is. Fred

What about early oil changes. I am over 2500 already. I plan to tow the Airstream to Florida this summer. I want to have the oil changed before I get on the road. Any issues wit a change before the computer says so?

There should be no problem changing the oil before the computer says it is required. As I understand it, the dealer should go through the "reset process" after the oil is changed. The computer will again calculate when your next oil change is required based on the type of driving you are doing. My experience with it coming on at 2,500 miles tells me the oil change frequency may be often enough to not need additional changes. Fred

cant say i really believe in a computer calculating my oil change. i did my first oil change at 3k and 5k every since. . switched to synthetic at 20k still change oil every 5k

I'm not sure I like a computer telling me when to change oil. How can a computer know when your towing. What if you are towing a very light trailer or a camper. I'd rather go by a schedule and I decide.

Mine came up with "Oil Change Required" at 1500 miles. Never towed anything with it yet. Just drive it around town. Changed oil and within 5 miles it's black as coal. I don't get it. Something related to emissions causing the oil to turn black so fast? Is it the properties of the "low ash" oil?

I'd be OK with a short interval for the first oil change, but if they can't reliably go more miles than that with three gallons of oil in the crankcase, then that sucks IMHO. I've been doing 5,000 mile intervals on my '05 even with dino oil.

Got the message at 2,500mi. Changed the oil and the "change oil" message wont go away. Is there a way to clear it??

Yes there is. Check your manual. There is a sequence to follow, but I don't remember what it is, as I have only done one oil change so far.

The black oil is normal, I have a 5. 9 and the oil is jet black right away after an oil change. I think it has something to do with soot, it is normal on diesels, I don't think it would be any different on a 6. 7.

Reset as follows: Key in ignition in ON position and push accelerator to floor 3 times with in 10 seconds... turn key off... . Then turn keep on and start and it should go away on the overhead display. .
