Just read about Ford and GM going into a partnership to develop a 6sp auto (Camping World e-mail). They also said that Chrysler had a 6sp auto developed by Diamler already, but haven't brought it out. Any one else hearing about new 6sp auto's for large cars and light trucks.

If they plan on putting it in "large cars", you can be darn sure it won't be going into any CTD equipped trucks.

I read the release on that from an investment forum. It was really a nothing story. I think the agreement was like 250,000 dollars total to be put into co-development of a new 6sp auto.

Engineering leaders all seem to believe that the world will be going to the 6 sp auto. The goal was to make it cross-platform compatible or at least make the technology compatible.

This is very early stages talk. They'll waste the 1/4 million just deciding what the name of the new group should be called.

This is YEARS away.

any why do they need 6 speed auto's? both their diesels are rev happy [with fraud winning that one] and they both have 5 speeds with deep 1st gears to make up for low end torque not being there [and gm defueling the engine in 1st]

there is no point. .

Actually, Mercedes now has a 7 speed automatic in their more expensive  cars. Joint ventures between auto manufacturers for "commodity" components are not unheard of. New Venture gear - a joint venture between GM and Chrysler - comes to mind, although this is not a timely example as GM is bailing out according to Ward's Auto World:

New Venture Gear, the powertrain joint venture formed in 1990 between DaimlerChrysler Corp. and General Motors Corp. , is being dissolved.

DCC, which had a 64% stake in the venture, will assume complete ownership of NVG. The operation will remain a separate company and continue to independently manage its business with GM and other customers. GM relinquishes its stake in NVG but will manage its plant in Muncie, IN, as an independent business. The facility had been part of the venture and makes transmissions, differentials, gears and other automotive components.

NVG's principal operations now include its current Syracuse, NY, facility, which produces transfer cases, transaxles and other automotive components for DCC, GM and other customers. NVG also will continue to operate its Roitzsch facility in Germany, which is beginning production of transfer cases for various automotive customers. Management, engineering and development functions at the Troy, MI-based headquarters will be restructured as future plans are finalized.
