Bought a 6 spd transmission filter from Geno's and had a thought. Could I modify and make a filter cover also a cooler? Had some 1" galvanized plate laying around. Cut to length for the gerth of the new filter cover. Used JB quick weld, a little filing and sanding, some rust proof paint and voila! A dual purpose filter. Originally transmission and transfer case was 200 degrees after a long drive. Drained factory fluid into a clean bucket using wife's panty hose. Bought 1 qt of make up fluid for each (ouch). Only 4,000 miles on the best truck I have ever owned. Refilled, too cool to tell if it will keep it cool. Looks like it will keep them 25% cooler. Will change fluid at 10,000 because it looks like I should. Shifts a lot better. Why don't they have an oil drain plug on the bottom of the transmission? Took the engineers 20 years to put them on the automatic transmissions. Long post but what we learn on this page helps all the Dodge cummins owners. Attached is a picture of the cooler. USA all the way. ;)

200*??

Great idea on the cooler/filter;) I have that same filter and think it should be on every transmission. You say your transmission got to 200* , although that is not too hot, it is plenty hot for just running empty. Mine stays around 150* empty and about 175* with a med load. :)
