I have a technical question on my truck. Last week I just bought a 2004 Dodge quad 4x4 drw Laraime with the HO and 6-speed with 3. 73. It has 61. 5k on it.

transmission makes a funny sound. While in 1st, 2nd,, or Reverse and just creeping along it feels like there is some slack in the gears in the transmission and it makes a loud (between 1-10 noise level 5) "growling noise" (not really a grinding noise) in the transmission it comes and goes every 2-3 seconds as the gears in the transmission are rotating/pressure is on them. But it shifts smooth and normal. This ones transmission is still under mfg warranty and I was hoping this issue will be covered. Out of my last few trucks, a 98,01,01,03 all manual dodge diesels and 3 six speeds I never had this noise. Can you tell me what this might be? the throwout bearing? transmission gears / internal bearings? normal wear? Do you think this problem would be covered under the mfg drive train warranty thats good on my truck till 70k?

It's called "torsional vibration" and is slightly dampened by the springs in your clutch. Give the truck some throttle and it will go away. I've been told it's totally normal. I'll also get a growl if I let the revs get too low and I lay into it with the boxes cranked up. I'm sure it will be much louder with my new dual disc.

The gears in the NV5600 are huge. It's not surprising that they make a bit of noise, IMO.

On edit:

There's a group buy on the new Fluidampr harmonic balancers. They are supposed to quiet some of this torsional vibration. I ordered one, can't wait to find out how it works.

I guess I have it too, I call it "gear rattle". I hear it in 2,3,R when creeping along at an idle (computer assisted idle). I live on a medium incline, and as I approach my parking spot I like to go slow- usually idling in 2nd, and that's when I can really hear it, until I clutch. I think it's the non- loaded gears buzzing on their shafts. It might sound crappy but I'm used to it.

My '01 did it and the '04 is worse, probably just 'cause I can hear it now. Never had any issues wth either. The '04 is creeping up on 92K with no probs (jinxed now).
