I'm new to the TDR and am hoping some one can help me out with a problem I'm having with my 04. 5 6 speed. The truck has 1600 miles on it and it seems has developed a major problem already. I parked in a friends driveway that is a fairly steep down grade. The truck was idleing for 10 minutes or so while I was talking to my buddy. He looked under my truck and noticed it was leaking oil from the bell housing. In the 10 minutes I was there it left a puddle of oil 2" in diameter. I think it's leaking from the input shaft of the trans since it only does it when the truck is facing down hill. I'm really ****** as this will certainly result in my new truck being torn apart by some monkey I don't know. Has anyone else had this problem?

Thanks for the help

Did you verify the lube was actually transmission oil? It has very specific odor to it, pretty easy to check, and beats heading down a deadend path. Oil leaks CAN originate from somewhere higher on the engine, then migrate to the lowest available drop-off point...

I had a major oil leak with 90 miles on it. It was coming from between the bell housing and the block. I thought it was going to be a rear main seal. It turned out to be a missing o-ring. The o-ring goes on a cast plug that is part of the bell housing that mates to the camshaft hole in the block. The o-ring was simply not installed. The transmission had to come out, but it turned out to be ok. It's now as good as new! It's got 1,900 miles on it now and no further leaks. Good luck.

I don't know for sure that it's trans fluid. I know the 6spd uses a light weight oil, which this is, but I am not aware of any color or specific odor. The oil leaking out is light in color, like motor oil, and does not have any specific odor. I assume trans fluid because when the truck is facing down hill the engine oil would be pooled in the front portion of the pan away from the rear main seal. I have an appointment to take the truck in next week. I hope I get it back in time to drive it up to Yosemite for my wedding at the end of the month.

Lost the front seal in mine at about 2,000 miles. Dealer had the truck overnight replacing the seal. No problems 22,000 miles later.

No comment on getting married vs. taking care of the truck ;)

Thanks for the replys. Can anyone give me the skinny on how to tell if the leaking fluid is trans fluid? One of the ealier posts said it had a specific odor. Can anyone describe the odor? I suppose I could pull the fill plug and dip my finger in and compare odors but I'd rather not if I don't have to.

Thanks

Presumably, your truck is under warranty - so in any event, you would report the problem to the dealer, they will place dye into either the transmission or engine oil so they can tell exactly what is leaking and from where - then plan appropriate action. Won't do a whole lot of good for you to isolate the problem, they probably won't take your word for it anyway, and have a specific gameplan they must follow to determine what their action will be...

Good luck - let us know what happens.

I'm not trying to plan out the dealers coarse of action. I just want to know myself before the truck goes in to them. I don't trust factory service centers all that much and like to have a clue whats going on in case they try giving me a line crap. Too many years dealing with Ford service centers I guess.
