Hi all,

I'm the proud owner of a new 2002, 2500, 4x4 Quadcab, Longbox with 6 Speed and HO engine. There's only about 220 miles on the truck but the transmission has been popping out of third gear unexpectedly about 20% of the time whether under hard or mild acceleration. Has anyone else experienced this problem and did it go away on its own? I'm hoping as the transmission wears in this will get better.

Thanks for the replies.

Bratton

PS> My previous truck was a '93 Turbodiesel with 5Speed. Just sold it to the first person who looked at it with 219,000 trouble free miles on the clock.

Bratton, welcome. About the transmission, not normal, won't get better on its own. I would take it right back to the dealer and have it fixed.

I agree with Big Toy and take it back to the dealer. There is something blocking the shifter from going into third or the transmission is defective.

Good Luck:cool:

Same on my 2001. 5 5 speed , 3rd gear , happens when you are down shifting (like when coming to a stop sign). 13,500 miles and no sign of it getting any better. Done it since new, also about 20% of the time. Off to the dealer I go also.

Welcome to the TDR. Sounds like a nice truck. I have not had any problems with my 6 speed. When you get a chance, work on your signature so that we know all the nity-gritty details of your truck.

Ok, the dealer has looked at the transmission now and says the oil in it was full off metal. They want to keep it and tear it down now. Looks like it wasn't assembled right. The good news for the rest of you I guess is that they have not seen this before on a 6-speed. I hope they don't have it too long, it's already torture not having my new toy around.

Should I insist on a new transmission? Don't know if I want them to rebuild it when it only had 200 miles on it.

Wow,

How many miles have you got on your new baby?? I don't trust rebuilds, sorry I have had some problems with rebuilds. Where did the metal come from?? Gears, Housing, Nut, Bearing... . you get the picture. I would request a new transmission, but it depends upon the dealer. They may just need to clean it out, but when they crack the seals, they'll see the real damage and hopefully come clean and get it done right.

Good luck, keep us posted.

Mine Too

I have a Y2K. . 3500. At about 10,000miles the transmission would jump out of gear under accelration, normal acceleration nothing harc. After it was warmed up it would be OK. This was in the winter. Took it to a dealer where I now reside and they wanted to

rebuild it. I didn't think that was right,so went back to the purchasing dealer and they put in a NEW one. So far so good. . I have about 33,000 miles on the truck now. Just occasional 3rd gear grind now going from 2nd to 3rd.

Hi Bratton,

I try to keep out of these "dealer" discussions :-{} cause I don't trust auto dealers any further than I could throw a Cummins block. I understand the delemma you're in, I'd tell em to keep the truck and give me my money back or put a new transmission in. The goons working on your transmission at the dealer have never seen the inside of a NV5600 and I would not want them guessing at the cause of such an early failure, much less trying to reassemble it correctly. New Venture engineers should be the ones doing the tear down and inspection. If they give you any grief call DC cutomer service and tell em you want your money back so you can go buy a ferd... (just bluffing of course :D)

Only 200 miles on the truck, got it last Saturday. Hasn't even towed anything yet. Oh well, if it's mechanical it can be put together the wrong way too.

I'm still sold on the Turbodiesel as I got 219,000 good miles out of my 1993. I went to the smaller turbine housing on it at 100K and turned up the fuel. The new truck feels a little stronger than the old one and the new one is 100% stock. The engine is going to stay that way until 100K.

BRATTON

You bought a NEW truck 200 miles ago. You did not buy one with a rebuilt trans. Insist on a new transmission.

Thanks for the replies! You're right, I'm going to insist on a new transmission or a different new truck. On a side note, I asked the dealer if they could refill the transmission so I could drive it while they sort things out and they said the oil that goes in the transmission costs $140 (it is synthetic). I hope there's no reason to change out that oil much!BD

Just talked with dealer again, they are going to put in new transmission and pay for rental car. Am driving a really cool Ford Escort sedan around for the next week.

Also asked the dealer to enable the high idle and 3 cylinder idle for the cold weather we have up here. He sounded agreeable to it, but he'd never heard of it before so hopefully it works. BD

Thats great, another success story. Let us know how it is when you get your baby back. I love my 6 speed, smooth and strong.
