Sounds like an electronic nightmare, swapping the trans is the easy part. Getting the all the electronic hardware and ECM programing to work is where it gets tough.

I doubt its worth it to d unless you havesome one to swap with and you both have the same configurations, and engine codes. If all that is the same, and you have enough time and patience,Im sure you could swap over the entire Harness/PCM in additon to the tcases, driveshafts, trans coolers, pedals, carpet, steering columns, and all the assorted stuff . You still may run into a problem that costs some bucks to get worked out I think its too much work, sell it,get a new auto.

I'm kinda partial to going the other way!! ;)

I would think if you found someone willing to swap everything for yours there would be no problem. I know I don't have a HPCR, but I never even swapped out the ECM/PCM for one in a stick truck... ... It's ALL GOOD :D

why not a stand alone controller for the trans... something like what is used with a hydro-mechanical engine... ? like swap in a allison 1000 and it's stand alone pcm... ?

Has anyone changed out their 6 speed for a 48re? I have given it a lot of thought as of recently...

Why not just trade trucks? I bet the money would come out to about the same and save both parties a lot of time and heartache and bloody nuckles.

Please reconsider , i just delivery of my 05' and love the 6spd. Traded my 3500 w/an auto transmission and would never go back to an auto , i know it might a matter of prefernce, but again think over. The straw that broke the camels back was a second transmission failure w/only 32k on the ticker, luckily had the extended warranty , had it serviced and order my 05' 6spd on the same day. I almost wanted to smack the sales man for insisting on selling me one with an auto transmission.

I know that the auto may have durability issues but I'm sick of shifting, plus when speed is mandatory, the stick just can't compete with the auto. ATS has the whole kit to switch from the 6 speed to the auto but they want $9,500 for it. Its going to be cheaper to trade out.

well when they want over $4000 to upgrade your stock auto trans ,$9500 is not to bad.

My truck before this one was an auto I blew the auto up paid $3000 for a what I was told a bulet proof transmission and ever sens they did it I had nothing but troubles with the transmission in fact I tradded the truck in on the new dodge with transmission problems I will never bye anoter auto to pull my trailor with I doun't care who builds them allison or mercadies just my 2cents

WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU WANT AN AUTOMATIC?

You have an EXCELLENT transmission now, speaking from a fair amount of "bad" experience, the worst automatic transmission on the market right now is the DC Auto ... I realize that shifting is a PITA but I would just get used to it and be thankful you ended up with the 6 speed.

I ordered mine with the manual, despite the Dealer trying like mad to get me to buy several autos he had on the lot that were everything I wanted but after a total of (3) automatic failures in two different "other" vehicles (SUV & SD FORD) I swore I would not go back again ... not for a vehicle I intend to "work" anyway, great for a "luxury" car.

Save your $$$, now and in the future, stick with the manual!

I to had the salesman try to sell me an automatic . My reply was if Chrysler did not have the CTD 5600 combo i would not buy another Dodge truck again.

I like the truck but that damn auto transmission 47re that should have been recalled due to all the reported failures.

No regrets with my 05' 6spd , love the 6 spd.

if you go with an auto, then you want reliability and an easy swap. The 47rh, (94 and 95) is the easiest to install in a conversion and is the most reliable. Three wires, (1. 12 volt power, 2. ground for O/D, 3. ground for lockup. Only problem will be that you will need to change the input of the trans case specific for a 47rh. The transcase inputs for the 47 rh is longer than the one for the 47re. But you will have to change it anyway when you go to an auto

I wouldn't go that far, I see plenty more GM & Ford wiped out auto's than Dodge.

You yourself said:

yea when I bought my 05 I was going to bye a 04 with that was fully loaded but decided I didn't need have the options in the truck so I told them no then they tried to get me to bye a auto brought all this paper work in on it to show me what they have done with the auto know to build them tougher I just told them no I need a 6 speed and was going to leave the the truck I bought they where unloding off the semi and I couldn't be happier except when I pay the payment

Matt,

Correct, my auto transmission failures have NOT been DC products, two Ford and one Rice Burner. No question, GM & Ford have plenty of failures on the boards ... but at least they have "attempted" to offer an automatic transmission that is actually designed to "work". Granted all the bugs are not out yet but by far they are much, much better at handling the abuse in their intended application then the transmissions they replaced, ie; GM's Allison and Ford's TorqShift. DC has done nothing but continued to mickey mouse, duct tape and band aid a fairly "unreliable" product.

FYI, I have posted on this subject previously, most certainly not everyone agrees and without a doubt, some folks have had much better luck with their automatics but the vast majority have NOT. I know several people and hear of many others that own one of the major three, they all s&*k when it comes to the reliability of their automatics until the Allison and TorqShift came out! DC will catch up sooner or later!
