What synthetic oil has been used in the 6-speed transmission? How is the shifting after as compared to before? I have a set of Fast Coolers to install and have to buy replacement oil. TIA, Sam.

DAWG,

I'm reading a piece of Amsoil literature right now that says to use Series 3000 5W30 in the NV 5600. That seems different to use motor oil in the transmission, I can fax a copy of it to you if you'd like. That way you can see it for yourself. I'm not a dealer, just looking at some of there literature.

DAWG-1, many TDR members have switched to Amsoil Series 3000 5W-30 HDD (100% synthetic) in their NV5600 transmissions with great results.

Rob Hanson (NW BOMBer) switched over to the aforementioned oil last year when he installed his Fast Coolers... call or Email him for his personal assessment.

I have been using the Amsoil Series 3000 5W-30 HDD in my six-speed for 25,000 miles now. It shifts smoother than stock and a recent oil analysis indicated no problems. I believe it is important to note that you will not have a right to any warranty claims if you use this oil. All oils, synthetic or conventional will suffer shear related viscosity loss in transmissions and should be periodically changed. I have settled on 30,000 mile change intervals on mine.

TDR Member Yogibear, if I remember right, has reported use of this oil in his transmission for over 100,000 miles without problems. Perhaps he will chime in.

There is at least one member that is using Redline MTL in his six-speed. It has the correct viscosity for this application as well.

The dlr. inst. new transmission at 29K, cause brg. went out of reverse gr. , had dlr. put the Ams. 5w30 in then. Kurt installed fast coolers at 148600, and oil looked fine, Kurt said he wished he would have caught it and put in his trk. , now have 171990, and no problems.

I tried Red Line MTL, worked almost as good as the factory stuff. Then I tried Royal Purple... ... crappy cold weather performance. Now I am back to the OEM stuff..... works great!

The old Getrag 5spd. that was in the pre-'94 trucks also specified 5W30 motor oil.

My new 2002 came with a defective NV5600, the dealer installed a new one at 200 miles. While waiting for the new transmission to arrive at dealer, I asked the Svc. Mgr. if he could just refill the old transmission while we waited as it was driveable. He didn't want to because the oil cost $140! I didn't realize it was just 5W-30 in the 5600. BD

I switched to the Amsoil 5W-30 in my 6 speed at I think 25K miles. Now have 38+K, including a trip 2 months ago to frigid western New Mexico to hunt Elk for a week. Nightly temps were <10* F every night. No shifting problems at all so far for me... .

Oil?

Does the transfer case also take the same replacement fluids or does it take somethimg different?? I'm also looking to switch to amsoil and am interested in finding the proper fluids for the job??
