I was told by a tech at BestBuy that if I pluged a new SIRIUS receiver into my previous wired 12v model it would burn up? He said the new models were 5. 9 volt and had to be wired in the RAM correctly. Aren't the cigar lighter, power outlets, etc all 12v? I can't see how the old 12v lead used on the old POS  SPORTSTER would be any differfent than using the lighter spot? Thanks, Doc

If the receiver plugs into the lighter outlet or an aux. power outlet, then 12 volts is 12 volts. Doesn't matter if the vehicle is a 2007 or a 1960.

Some devices use a lower voltage... . like the 5VDC that powers my cell phone... It will charge with a vehicle adapter or plugged into the side of my laptop with a USB cable... . The power cord for my vehicle adapter already has the necessary voltage reduction circuit within it... . to power the cell phone and charge the battery...

If your adapter for the radio comes with a vehicle adapter cord, we can assume that the engineers have done their job... .

Remember there are lots of toys with different voltage requirements... thats why the plug on the end that plugs into the toy is unique..... hopefully someday they will standardize this... . like the power available from the USB port... . it charges my phone, my ear piece, the batteries on my digital camera, etc... ...

Hope this helps... .

My old sportster that I use in my office is 12V. The newer ones use a lower voltage I think. HOWEVER, the cable that comes with them (with the plug on the end you plug into the cigarette lighter) has a voltage changer in them. The cable still plugs into a cigarette lighter, but the voltage coming out the Sirius end is less then 12V. If you want to keep the wire hidden, just buy a cigarette lighter adaptor and put it under the dash somewhere, then plug the Sirius supplied cable into it.
