I've seen this 6 way turn signal conversion listed on a few signatures, what is it and how do you do it. I did a search and came up with nothing.

you need to email evan beck... he is THE MAN!

Ahh yes, the good old turn signal conversion...

Well I first did this on my 98. 5 after a few incidents with people in my blindspot. SO here's what I did...

Converted the existing backup lights to turn signals, and disabled the red turn signals ont he rear. I had to switch out the clear bulbs in the backup lights, and put amber ones in. Then I added 2 side-marker style turn singals ont he B-pillars of the truck, right in line with the trim. I just removed the small section of trim, and put a light there. On my 98. 5, I used amber dually fender markers for the side turn signals. On my 2001, I used trailer marker lights I got from a truck supply store. They are single bulb, rather than dual blubs like on the 98. 5.

But the wiring is where it got a little tricky. You can't just switch around a few wires in the rear tail lights. If you do that, there will still be red turn singals in the back. So what I had to do was add 4 wires going to the back of the truck. One for left turn signal, one for the right, one for brake lights, and one for backup lights. I had to had a brake light wire because I wanted the trailer tow system to work in stock form.

Then, up front, I had to re-wire some of the multi-function switch. This was so the amber turn signals would work separate from the red brake lights, and so the trailer tow wiring would work.

If anyone is interested in exactly how to do it, email me and I can send you a wiring diagram.

I did the turn signal conversion to my truck as well, except I didn't add lights to the sides right behind the quad doors like Evan did. Evan helped me out since I had no clue how to wire it. It looks much better having steady reds when braking and flashing ambers for your turns. To me it looks dorky to have one steady taillight and one blinking when you're at a stop with your turn signal on. Amber turn signals are much easier to see and are way #ad

Vauhgn,
Do the ambers work with the e-flashers? I'm thinking it would be better if the rear lights continued to flash when you have your foot on the brake.

Rattlin,

The ambers do work with the e-flashers too. All red blinking of any sort is eliminated with my conversion. However, it can be wired so the reds still work.

I've been thinking about doing this on my truck. However, I figure I only have to run 2 wires from the front, 1 for each amber turn signal. The backup light wires are already back there and there's that wire labeled HCMBL or something like that ("high center-mounted brake light?". Anyway it just a brake light lead (i. e. not a turn signal also).

Evan, why did you run backup and brake light wires from the front? Is this an amperage issue?

Kyle,

The extra brake light wire is run ONLY for the brake lights on the truck. It is needed so the trailer tow connector functions in a stock manner. The "CHMSL" wire could be used, but it is awfully small. I figured the heavy gauge wire would be better.

I ran extra backup light wires because I am using high wattage driving lights for backup lights. The stock wiring and backup light switch on the transmission are not rated for the 110W of lighting I hooked up. Instead, I used a relay actuated by the backup light circuit. I also wired the backup lights to be controlled with an override switch, so I could use them without having to be in Reverse.

Here's the diagram for the turn signals for the 2001 Ram:

Evan, Thanks for the diagram. What you said makes sense. I was thinking that I'd use the leads at the rear to switch the relays, but that puts my relays in the back. I like the way you did it better. That way I can put the relays up front under the hood with all the other relays.

I'm thinking about side-mounted turn signals (like you see on the Mercedes and Saabs). Where do you think is the best place to mount them? I'm thinking that little space in front of the door crack, behind the front fender. That would not require any wiring in the door. Do you think that is too far forward? Also, what do you think about using the amber marker lights that come on the front of the 3500 rear fenders? They fit nicely in the indention right above the side molding but I'm not sure they're bright enough. Any thoughts?

Evan, Yes I got it. Thanks. I've been too busy to reply. I'll let you know when I tackle this job. I might have more questions then. Thanks again for your input.
Kyle

I was thinking about mounting a bright LED in the mirror housings but no time for install. Not as neat as the ones with the < > like on some fords but would do the same thing.
