Ahh yes, the good old turn signal conversion...
Well I first did this on my 98. 5 after a few incidents with people in my blindspot. SO here's what I did...
Converted the existing backup lights to turn signals, and disabled the red turn signals ont he rear. I had to switch out the clear bulbs in the backup lights, and put amber ones in. Then I added 2 side-marker style turn singals ont he B-pillars of the truck, right in line with the trim. I just removed the small section of trim, and put a light there. On my 98. 5, I used amber dually fender markers for the side turn signals. On my 2001, I used trailer marker lights I got from a truck supply store. They are single bulb, rather than dual blubs like on the 98. 5.
But the wiring is where it got a little tricky. You can't just switch around a few wires in the rear tail lights. If you do that, there will still be red turn singals in the back. So what I had to do was add 4 wires going to the back of the truck. One for left turn signal, one for the right, one for brake lights, and one for backup lights. I had to had a brake light wire because I wanted the trailer tow system to work in stock form.
Then, up front, I had to re-wire some of the multi-function switch. This was so the amber turn signals would work separate from the red brake lights, and so the trailer tow wiring would work.
If anyone is interested in exactly how to do it, email me and I can send you a wiring diagram.
