Since I'm going to be replacing the valve guide seals on my '91 CTD, I thought it was a great time to upgrade to 60# HD valve springs, but should I replace all 12 of the valve springs, or only the exhaust valve springs?

I understand that only the exhaust springs are needed for full effect from an exhaust brake, but all 12 should be replaced if I intend to spin the engine over 3500 rpm. Is that correct?

Also, will all '94-'98 12V valve springs fit the first gen's?

all 12v take the same springs

over 3500?

if i were gonna spin my motor 4 grand or better i dont think i would be using these funny looking cummins springs

why you gonna spin it so high?

josh's truck picked up when he took that big spring out and put the 366 back in

i have heard stories of folks seeing small indents in the carbon from piston to valve contact (with the stock springs) but i dont know if it were both valves or only one or what the circumstances were...

ps - cool vids you have there on your ramcharger site!

arent they great trucks? bought a '76 (in '78) sm blk 4sp truck - it came from utah.

never could figure out how the rear bumper was bent the way it was bent until i watched one of your videos tonight

thanks

Thanks Don, old Dodges are the best.

I plan to replace all 12 valve springs with the HD 60# springs, I really would just like to make sure it's all good, especially in the intake side. It's not that I plan to wind the engine past 3500rpm, but the security is nice, and while I'm here, why not.

have you seen em yet?

mine are still somewhere in UPS ville but as soon as they show up i will pull a stocker out of my motor, measure the installed height, throw one of these "60 psi springs" in my valve spring tester, and see what they make on the seat

i heard that they are around 150 on the seat

You can spin over 4000 with a 366 spring and some added timing.

Replace all twelve. Valve float is also determined by how much boost you have pushing against the intake valves in conjunction with rpm.

I haven't ordered them yet. Where did you order yours?

I've been searching, and I can find 12-valve Cummins 60psi valve spring kits varying from $50-$150. I suspect that some of these contain 6 springs, and others contain all 12.

I assume that the Pacbrake C14010 or the BD Diesel 1030060 kits both only contain 6 springs, is that right? Can I just order two kits to replace all twelve? (the exhaust and intake springs are the same?)

6 came in the pxrb pac brake kit so i just had them throw another 6 in the box

they charged me 50 bucks for the those 6

i still dont know if i will be running them tho

i will know as soon as the kit shows up, i check them, and talk to PSI

the psi springs i run in my bike (pn #1221) are $250 for a set of 8 springs

they are a double valve spring and produce 140 pounds at 1. 400 and coil bind does not occur until they are compressed to . 600 - good to 14,000+ rpm

double springs are nice because if you have a spring break on you (its almost always the outer that breaks) the inner spring will keep it enough retainer pressure against the keepers so that it doesnt drop the valve

i have never broke a psi valve spring, btw (but i have broke EVERYONE elses)

I Put 80lb Cummins Springs All The Way Across, We Turn 4500 Rpms And Have Not Hade A Problem, And They Where Only 70 Bucks, Good Luck

did ya happen to measure the seat pressure with those?

1. 940" is the installed height - i checked it myself (thank you everyone that has rebuilt these heads but wo9uldnt say)

AND PAC BRAKE SENT ME A BUNCH OF EXTRA 60# SPRINGS

they produce 155 pounds on the seat

PSI is closed now, find out what they have tomorrow

who needs 60# spring$ ?

the stripe is off white - yes, they are cummins springs

(barrel type spring - looks like a bed spring)

they are 155 pounds on the seat

i dont know why anyone would want a stiffer spring than that for a street motor?

unless they are going to be spinning it 8,000 rpm...
