I have a 2006 dodge quad cab with twins, a couple chips, 90 HP injectors, bigger pump, fast 150, banks intercooler, and i have eaten 2 ATS transmissions (in under 10000 miles) which the first was 100% covered and am just waiting to here what they are going to cover on the second one (very pleasedwith there customer service so far) what i want to know is what needs to be done to hold this kind of HP and torque I do alot of towing for my business 15000# to 22000# weight I know every body has got there preference on which transmission builder does the best work but i am looking for the specifics on what would make this 48RE last. I am really leaning toward that there is just not enough gears in this transmission and am considering either a gear vendor unit or the destroked kit for the allison. Would like to know what others have done to hold the power.

Thanks

Ben

Just because you have all that HP... . or think you do... doesn't mean you can use it all the time. And a Gear Vendors unit is not recommended for GVW's over 30k.

Go to DTT, Diesel Transmission Tech, DTT Performance Diesel Transmission and Power Accessories and spend some time reading their very informative website re the 48re transmission.

Also try this website SEARCH features using keyword, 48re transmission, then select, display titles only.

The DTT website is several hours excellent transmission technology reading regardless of what vendor you spend $$$$ with.

MMeier, please elaborate on what you mean (or think you do) and (doesnt mean you can use it) almost seems like you are implying that i am lying about what i have for HP, also when i spend 6000 dollars for a transmission that is supposedly to be able to handle 1000HP plus yes it does mean i can use when and where i want. As for the gear vendor i did not know there was a recomended weight limit because when i spoke with the gentleman on the phone the only thing that he said is that it wouldnt be warratied if i used the overdrive while in over drive while towing loads.

You say the transmission was eaten. Do you know specifically what failed?

THoltz,

I am not sure yet as to what exactly is wrong with the transmission but it slips when shifting between gears and when pan was taken off there was what seemed to be clutch or band material in the bottom and the magnetic plug was covered with debris. as for the first transmission second gear failed do to a faulty throttle valve so I was told

No need to get mean:rolleyes:... have you dynoed the truck? With all your mods there I would hope you have at least that much. 2nd part... hauling upwards of 30k# probably is not in the best interest of the truck in the first place, not just the trans. When I was hauling 30-40k when I was up and running, I pretty much kept my power levels below 500 HP. My . 02

My response was only reflective of yours, and as stated in the first post 22,000# is the highest weight i have pulled it was for a very short distance but i regularly pull loads at 15 to 17000# and when i am pulling i put my PMT to tow mode and turn my MP8 off and drive very concervatively. I thinkl when a person pays that kind of money for a transmission he should be able to use it for what the builder said that it would hold and in this case it hasnt.

i will sell you the transaxle in my neon, i cant break it knock on wood lol i would try working it out with ats before posting about it, some people might take you the wrong way and start a trans war like mentioned before and the trans builder might be rubbed wrong and end up taking your money and denying warranty on the trans, not saying ats would do that, but i have had the warranty voided on a brand new truck over a set of all terrain tires that were a hair bigger than stock and my loud mouth... ... i also agree that you should get what you paid for and what was promised to you...

not bashing, and i am 100% SATISFIED with there customer service, just trying to get more info on what could be done to help this transmission hold the power so i dont have all the down time on my work truck

There are a lot of things that can be done to a 48RE. My 05 is above 850hp, and the trans lives in it. It however is built for drag racing, as well as being a daily driver. I do not use it to tow heavy.

My 02 makes 640hp. It is used for drag racing, and it tows about 10K. The trans in the 02 doesn't have as many "upgrades" as the one in the 05.

Once you find out what failed, it would be easier to give you advice as far as what can be done to prevent it in the future. It would also help if you could tell us what had already been done to it.

I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help then just telling you that it is possible to make the 48RE a strong transmission.
