Heads up for those installing the upgraded steering pump kit ....
I finally gathered all of my parts to install the 68170214AA Steering box upgrade and since my pump was acting up I chose to move to the 68034326AB Pump and Pulley kit as well. After struggling removing the original components (maybe a post some time in the future) I laid out the old and new pumps together to prepare for the pulley install on the new pump. After confirming the pulley flanges are the same thickness measurements were taken from the pulley flange to both sides of the original pump mounting flanges. One note.. the original pump had .03" end play in the shaft so the original measurement was a range and not an exact number. As I pressed the new pump pulley on the distance to the flange was watched closely (using a pulley pressing tool, not a press). Once the pulley was in the middle of the original measurement I removed the pulley install tool and was surprised to see the pulley was not flush with the end of the shaft! After multiple checks, rechecks and triple checking the correct pulley install for my pump is about 3/16 shy of flush on the pump shaft.... not what I expected based on other vehicle pump/pulley installs. Here are some pictures showing how I measured and the final position.....

If you were like me and expecting to press the pulley flush it would have shredded the serpentine in a very short time!!

So you are saying it shouldn't be flush? I used a pulley installer tool to do mine and put it on all the way. I'll check it in the AM to see if it is flush as it is back in the box waiting for me to find time to install it. David

Since I don't own a pulley installer tool I had it installed already at my friends place so that I can put the pump on whenever I get time. We put it on as far as it would go. Today I check my neighbour's 08 as he has had the new pump installed already and it seams like I have installed mine on farther than his is. Did I oops? David

When I installed a new PS pump, I used a 3' aluminum yardstick to make sure the pulley was lined up with the others. The one I bought, 52013978AD, used the old bracket which also has some adjustment range. I did not have to move the bracket. See Issue 73, pp. 92-94.

Thanks Joe. I just read your article in issue 73. So much for getting things ready ahead of time. I'll have to re-borrow my friends pulley tool and match the old and new when I do the job. David
