My 6860 kit is supposed to include spacers which fit on the shaft while re-setting the timming (P/N 6862). My kit came with the 6862 and contained 6 flat washers. The TSB18-10-94 calls for a bearing and washer P/N 6862.

My question: should my kit have included a flat roller bearing and washer instead of 6 flat washers?

At Auto Wurks Diesel, we use an electronic tool for setting timing. Unfortunately, we can't measure the wild injection on the race pump with it, so we use the dial gauge method. I never saw, nor used the bearing and washer method that the service manual recommends. What I do is set it up and measure the timing, pop the gear off the shaft, turn the engine about 1/2 inch harmonic balancer travel in the direction desired (to advance you want to turn the engine backwards which is clockwise with the barring tool), then clean off the shaft with brake cleaner and lock down the gear with the nut and snug it good, but don't torque it until you measure it and see where you are because you may have to do it again. Caution, the pump also will spring back a couple degrees once over the 12. 5 mark. Be prepared to compensate for it. Finally torque the nut to spec. We use 160 ft/lbs. #ad

DleselB59,

Do you take the gear all the way off the shaft so that you can clean it?
Also, how do you keep the shaft from rotating do to spring pressure on the pump cam?

Thanks

At any timing setting really over 10 degrees, the cam of the pump will snap back to a neutral position, which you'll have to overcome by turning the engine a few degrees more. Just pop off the gear and pull it as close to the front cover as possible, then use the little hose on the brake clean can and spray around the shaft and inside of the gear a couple times and you'll be fine. Leave it oily and it will slip timing on you while driving.
