Man, It would be the ultimate combo. TDR magazine had an intervieuw with one of the engineers that designed it, said it had a stand-alone controller that only interfaces with the ECM for engine brake control. sounds to me it would be faily simple.

That's not how I understood the article. . . I am the guy who wrote the question printed in the TDR mag about retrofitting it to older trucks. The jist of the response was the 68RFE control electronics are highly integrated with the ECM & PCM and standalone configuration would be a difficult challenge. With the right person it may be doable, but it'll take some work.

I sure wish I could stick one in my '98 12-valve, I've been thinking about the Allison 1000 6-speed, but the ratios of the 68RFE are much better suited to my combo for towing!

man i would donate random body parts to swap a 68rfe into my 96 after driving one the engine was impressive but i perfer my 12v:D but god that transmission is amazing! i wonder how they'll stand up to bombed trucks?

I would think it would need beefing up just like the 47/48REs to handle extra horsepower. A fully built 68rfe behind a bombed 5. 9 would be the ultimate, but very pricey. I bet within a few years someone will have a conversion. And, I'd take a WAG that it'd be 5 figures in cost.
