I am curious if anyone has seen a sump filter like this one when doing a transmission fluid and filter change. This truck was purchased used from a Ram dealer with 13000 miles on the odometer 3 years ago. Presently have 47000 miles on the odometer. The truck is used to pull a 5th wheel (13000 lbs.) but has spent most of its life as transportation to and from work with frequent light hauling duties. A PML extra deep transmission pan and appropriate filters were purchased recently from Geno's for the first transmission fluid and filter change. I have no reason to believe that anything was done to the transmission in the 13000 miles with the previous owner. I have every reason to believe that this was to be the first transmission fluid and filter change for this transmission.

There have been no issues with the transmission since I have owned it. The transmission pan drainage and removal was routine. No unexpected debris was noted in the bottom of the pan. New filters have been installed with a new sump filter seal and RevMax steel spin on filter screw upgrade. The new extra capacity PML pan installation was uneventful. Refilling the transmission to the proper level is all that remains.
 
I had the exact same problem on my 2014 2500. Transmission shop put in aftermarket filters for my first fluid change. During the winter the truck would not disengage clutch when come to a stop, also as soon as I would put in gear first thing in the morning it would lunge forward. Took to another shop and the pan filter was split just like yours. The factory filter has a check valve which is purple in color. Problem solved immediately. The first shop reimbursed my money.
 
was it a oe filter ? not long ago i changed the filter on my corolla and i bought a oe and aftermarket just to see the difference in construction and qaulity. the aftermarket ones looked very cheaply made compared to the factory toyota one. the oe is about 3x the price but worth it imo. the aftermarket ones i threw in the trash
 
I have no reason to believe that the filter I removed was anything other than the original filter. I purchased the truck from a Ram dealer with 13000 miles on the odometer. It was owned by a brother-in-law of the dealer owner who intended to use it to pull a 5th wheel but never did. He traded it for something he could use. From the pictures, it can be seen that that both filters are made by Filtran with the same numbers. The original filter did not have the purple check valve mentioned by guru42. The new filter purchased from Geno's does.
As guru42 mentioned, an interesting note is that this truck has had a history of not disengaging sometimes when coming to a stop at only one stop sign. That stop sign is located one quarter mile from the bottom of my driveway at the end of a very steep cliimbing grade. It has never happened under any other circumstances. We shall see if this filter change remedies that situation.
 
Here is a picture of the extra deep PML transmssion pan in place. I used a gasket purchased at Geno's with the pan rather than RTV. I was very pleased with the quality, fit, and installation. I used a fluid vacuum to suction as much fluid as possible from the original pan before loosening it and pouring out the remaining fluid. You can see the tip of the vacuum tube in a picture above with the defective filter. The front wheels were driven up on stepped boards to elevate the front end 4 1/2 inches so that I had room to slide under to service the transmission before emptying it. Between what I evacuated and what dripped in the drain pan overnight, I measured approximately 12 quarts of drained fluid ( I was expecting somewhat less). To refill the transmission to the proper level required 15 3/4 quarts of transmission fluid. The fluid I used was NAPA ATF +4. The initial test drive was normal. I have not gone the direction of the stop sign where the transmission did not disengage. I will report later if that continues to be an issue.

I gave you a short version regarding my issue with the trans. I live in Manitoba and it would be really bad when the temp got down to -20 and worse the colder it got. Once I did about 3 stops within a mile and trans reached about 100 degrees it would be okay. I found the issue on this forum someone asking transengineer regarding this problem. Both transmission shops did not believe me regarding the filters causing this problem. I told the second shop to just perform the filters and fluid change anyways. I wanted factory filters used. I was about to sell the truck if problem persisted. Thats when the tech called and told me I was correct about the pan filter. Truck now shifts the way I purchased it. You will find your truck will shift better than when you purchased it. That filter was probably split shortly after it was installed. Thats why they installed that updated check valve. Good luck
 
Thank you for your very informative reply. I wasn't expecting to correct the intermittent problem at the same time as changing the filter. I wasn't even sure what it was those times that I experienced it. It seemed more like someone pressing the accelerator while I was braking for the STOP sign. It was very disturbing when it occurred. We don't experience the winter temperatures that you do, otherwise it appears that I would have had more frequent episodes at more than just one location.
 
Thank you drmarkreed. I am getting ready to do this transmission oil and filter change. Still going back and forth on which pan to buy PML,Mag HyTec, ATS, etc. I noticed you replaced the spin on filter screw with the RevMax Steel Upgrade. Did you have any issues with removing the old plastic screw?
