Just got my 2500 HO 6sp 2 months ago and have 1500 miles on her. Why didn't I buy a diesel years ago. Love getting heads to turn when I fire it up. Love getting 20mpg cruising at 65. Love passing people at 70 pulling my 4,000lb boat up the mountains in Oregon.

Now. . to my questions

1. When cold, 3rd and 4th gear must be "babied" or they grind. After warming up, shifts smooth as silk. However, I would hate to ruin this so called $600 extra heavy duty transmission by grinding everytime I have to pull out in traffic when it's cold.

2. If the truck is in neutral, and I press and release the clutch pedal, the RPMs on the truck "blip". Is this normal?

Any advice from you experienced diesel people would be most appreciated.

as far as the 3/4 cold grind, give it some more miles to break-in. Mine did the same thing, kinda still does, remember it's a HD truck transmission not a 6spd car transmission. #2 It's the ECM causing the blip, it's normal and nothing to worry about. If you didn't know, try letting the clutch out slowly> the ECM will not let the engine die, a nice feature on hills.

Thanks Al. I have been doing some experimenting with different shifting techniques... . hopefully that along with more breakin will reduce it significantly. Seems if I keep the RPMs up it shifts smoother. Thanks for pointing out the ECM feature. That is pretty cool. All in all it is a great truck and an awesome engine.

I have 2000 3500 QC with the six speed. When I first got mine third gear was making some noise going in when cold and sometimes forth. I now have 55k on it. Were I live it does not get real cold. I travel alot and recently was in New Bedford Mass in March and April of this year doing a job on a Coast Guard Ship. It was much more pronouced up there in the cold than in Florida when you first get going. Double clutchin helped alot. Alot of the guys on this web site attribute the little bit of chatter as wearing the sharp edges off. Once worn some, it will go in smoother. Mine is also a little rough going back into 2nd while moving slightly.

As far as the little bump you talk about. Mine will do the same thing each time I let the clutch out when out of gear. I never really paid much attention to it nowing that its a load applied to the engine being picked up by the governor. Thats want I always thought it was. But like I said it does it every time. Hope this helps.

My 3500 6spd HO would grind going from 4th to 5th when it was cold after 6000 miles it was still doing it and as the mornings started geting colder the amount of grinding got worse by that I mean the grear shift would shake the hell out of hand going into 5th gear. Then once the engine warmed up, every thing would work fine. Last week my dealer replaced the transmission and the problem is gone.

Grind is not normal!

I think a transmission that grinds new will grind or have problems done the road. Out of four new 2001 6sp we got 3 grind. As winter approaches this they will all have 8 - 20K on them. The grinding seems to have disappeared this summer. If it returns with enough miles to dispell the breakin suggestion they we are going to request new replacements.

The one I drive will usually grind or cluck going into 1st if moving even 1 mph even with a hot engine and transmission. The one that does not grind never grinds. Not at -30 and never anytime in between. It is a joy to drive.

While these are heavy duty transmissions, they are fully syncronized in all forward and reverse gears. Just like the 5speeds They should not grind. NEVER!
