Is there a diffrence between the 01 6sp clutch and the 03 6sp clutch? I was talking to one of the transmission techs at my dealer and he said they were the same but I've read here that they are diffrent. Thanks.

I will have a new one from the dealer and a used one out of an 03 by next week and will put them through the tests. I will have an answer by the end of next week.

I can tell you they feel different. No judder on back-up under load, silky-smooth engage, much better than my '00 5-speed.

My buddy at the Dodge dealer looked the parts up on the computer. They have different part numbers and the '03 appears to be larger in diameter. He didn't have them in stock so I can't say for sure.

Peter@ Southbend,

Great product by the way... had one in my 01. While you are investigating can you see if you can find out what is making all the racket in the new 6 speeds. I have a slight whirling noise in neutral with the clutch out almost all of the time... sometimes it is rather loud. There is also noise present at every up shift. There are a lot of us with these symptoms. Maybe the noises were masked by the engine noise is previous models??... CJ

I'd be willing to bet it's a by-product of too-thin lube in a heavy duty truck transmission... ;)

I don't think the problem is the lube being to thin, as in my case, it doesn't seem to matter if it is cold or hot. Sometimes it makes noise and other times it does not. My dealer said it is just the slop in the gears.

First of all, I want to thank Fred for finding me the '03 clutch at a good price to help us R&D the situation. We did receive the clutch and the clutch disk is identical to the '01 & '02 6 speed. The pressure plate in overall appearance looked identical except for a slight difference in the curve of the diaphragm. After plate load testing the pressure plate, and compared to the earlier '01 & '02 it offers 100 lbs. more plate load. It looked like the '01 & '02 clutch assembly is good to about 300-315 lbs before slipping, this clutch should be able to offer a little higher number but with the quality of the clutch disk material, I'm not sure how long the clutch will last at the higher horse power. For now, I would say that you would be good to around 350 hp. Hope this helps.

Many have had some "gear" or clutch noise at slow speed or in reverse, some seem to be getting quieter with use. One member had two transmission changes and still the noise, a clutch replacement fixed it.

Best advice, note it to your dealer now and have them enter it in the vehicle record, drive it awhile and watch it closely.

Also, check gearbox lube level if you haven't already.

Mine does it too but is getting better.
