In order to make the same amount of boost in 6th, I need to be up there in RPM's, seems to be RPM dependent more so then what gear I'm in.

As long as I am not lugging it, I can hit the same numbers in either gear. Just moving a lot faster in 6th, though. If I am flogging it, I can let off the pedal for the 5-6 shift, and as soon as I get back on it, the boost goes right back up to where it was in 5th.

I have to be over 2000rpm in any gear before I see max boost. If I punch it at 2000 rpm the boost spikes to 35-36 psi before settling in at about 32psi. 2000 rpm is about 75 mph for me, so it is not too often I see I boost #'s in 6th. So I am more likely to see higher boost #'s in 5th, but am capable of producing the same numbers in 6th.

6 2 Carl, I don't know much YET about if it is important for me to know what my Boost pressure is at any given point I hope you or someone can explain to me if it is a good idea for me with a stock truck to install a Boost gage. I am planning on installing an Air Dog primarily to help filter the fuel to a lower micron level to hopefully prevent excessive wear of my 05 fuel system caused by the sandblasting effect of 5-10 micron particles in the fuel with today's higher injection pressures

I live in a rural section of Northern Calif. usually in 4th or 5th gear there are only a couple of short stretches that I can use 6th as most road conditions will only allow aprox 40 mph road speed. The overhead reads about 15 mpg and it is about 2 mpg high vs hand calculated. Anyway I was surprised this weekend as I had to drive freeway (to San Jose area) well freeway was moving along I had to go 80 to 85 mph JUST to keep up with the traffic flow and I was not in the passing lane. At times the I had to kick it up to 90 mpg to position myself for a lane change or just to keep up with the flow. Truck really likes to be a 80+. ON way home this afternoon northbound speeds were 70 mph and overhead was reading 17 mpg. I remember the fuel shortage and hi prices of the 70s at that time everyone kept it around 60 to 65 mph even though the speed limit was reduced to 55 mph

Thanks for any info on the Boost questions,

Bill

A boost gauge isn't required on a stock truck. It can tell you if you have a low or high boost problem. Such as a busted intercooler, or a defective wastegate. However you would notice a low boost situation buy low power and high boost will set off a code.

I still think a boost gauge is a useful tool. It is a good indicator of how hard your truck is working, and it can help you get better mileage. I find if I keep the boost under 10 psi on the highway I get the best mileage. If I have a tailwind I can sometimes cruise over 75mph with less then 10 psi boost, where as if I am bucking a wind boost can easily climb over 10psi at 60 mph.

If you plan on keeping your truck stock I would recommend getting the 35psi boost gauge over the 60 psi version. The 35psi model has a larger sweep in the 0-10 psi range and that is the boost range that I am most interested in. I recently switched over to a 60psi gauge, when I made my 35psi gauge into a fuel pressure gauge. I wish I just got another 35psi gauge instead of the 60.

Carl, Thanks for reply and info. Only thing I am planning to do to my truck is install an Air Dog primarily to filter the fuel to a smaller micron level. Can you tell me what upgrades would you suggest require a boost gauge. I am thinking of eventually installing a few gauges in my truck. But my problem is I don't want to loose the hand grip on pillar so I understand I can only place one gauge on pillar and place two gauges on steering column, so that is only a total of 3 gauges I am reluctant to place any gauges on dash I don't want to obstruct my vision.
