Ok, I have an 06 3500 G56, and I love the truck. It has 160k miles, and other than needing injectors, it is awesome. My only complaint is the final drive of the shorter 6th gear.

My question is, I understand the newer trannies have a taller 6th gear, so I was wondering if that swap could be made in my transmission to lower my rpms a tad? I have no idea how to do it, or if it could be done, so I figured I'd come here for some help.

Thanks

Corey

I am sure there is no reason the sixth gear ratio couldnt be changed. The problem is more likely to be getting your hands on the part you need. Maybe that is easier than I realize but it is a Mercedes trans as far as I know, and NAPA isn't going to have what we need.

It essentially means a transmission rebuild though, not a huge deal, but you likely have to do a lot of disassembly to get to that last cog.

Anybody have any idea how hard the parts are to get?

I'm going to try and locate the gear, then i'll see how hard the rebuild is. At 160k, a rebuild isn't a bad idea anyway.

thanks

If possible Please ckeck in to an even taller gear maybe . 065 Id like to know if there is anything out there. But if you tar it apart why not gear it the way you want it.

Great idea!!! If our G56's are anything like the NV4500 from the 2gen trucks, then it should be a piece of cake to change! That trans had 5th gear (OD) on the main shaft, and at the rear of it too! It was easily accessible by removing the tailshaft housing (8 to 10 bolts) and you were staring at it! The gear was only held onto the main shaft by way of a large nut and lock ring which loosened up over time BTW, and you'd lose 5th gear!!! That's how I know how this all looked... had to take it apart and install a repar kit from Dodge. Once in there and the nut removed, the gear would slide right off the main shaft. I believe in many modern transmission designs, the final gear is located in this spot, but I could be wrong. Another question is if any other mating gear(s) would need to change as well...

I hope its as easy as the NV4500's! Thats why I got to thinking about it, I remember losing 5th gear, and the repair wasnt all that bad. I would love to hear from someone that knows the inside of this trannys.
