I have 2002 ram with the 5. 9 HO Cummins. I have 180,000 miles on it and I have always used a standard 10 Micron fuel filet (a Fram, Champion or Fleetguard). I live in CA and with all new ultra-low sulfur fuel, I am thinking of going with a WIX 33585XE. It is a 7mircon fuel filter.

Will the switch from the 10 micron down to 7 micron filter starve my injector pump of the needed flow? Any thoughts? Thanks

You have a fuel pressure gauge installed I hope? If not, that's your first priority.

While a 7 micron filter may cause a drop in fuel pressure under high demand, as long as you're seeing no less than 5psi at the VP44 fuel inlet under all operating conditions, then you're fine.

Happy New Year,

I had a similar thought switching from a 10 micron filter to a 7 micron filter. However when I went to Cummins in Sparks, NV. they recommended staying with the 10 micron filter as originally specified. That was good enough for me to maintain the "status quo".

I still have the stock fuel filter assembly (soon to be gone), and I am also running a 2 micron Cat 1R-0749 on the frame rail. I have a FASS HPFP, and that seems to do fine keeping up with fuel supply needs even with the more restrictive filter.
