in a few posts i've read people recommending to upgrade from a dana 70 to an 80, why? what is the weak link on the 70 that the 80 will upgrade? seems to me that an aluminum chain driven transfer case would be the drivetrains weak link ... in high performance (pulling/racing) you'd be running in 4wd and the 60 would be the weak link no matter what the rear ... just wondering

The rear axle is the one doing the majority of the pulling at the big end of the track. The weak link with a 70 is the pinion when the tires are planted good.

The Transfer case is only chain drive to the front axle. The input and output shafts are locked together so it`s stright through power in 2wheel drive. There`s nothing wrong with the 70 on the breakage part. The 80 has larger parts (ring@pinion@bearings) so withstands high torque and heat better. Thats why the Auto`s come with the 70 less Horsepower and Torque.

I have an auto and it's got the 80. Thats an option you can get on the truck regardless of trannys

If you already know everything why did you ask? Some people think they have Options that where not available! O-O

Sorry, the 80 hybrid is on the 2500 W/manual trans. It had the 80 center section and tubes to the spring perches, then it is the same as the 70's. The ONLY way to get a full 80 is with the 3500.

Maybe it was an option in the later years of the second gens, but in the early years it was fixed, 2500 autos got a 70 and manuals got a hybrid 80.

You might be right, I am going to try and dig out all the buyers info. I think I still have the window sticker and all. This thread got me curious as I know when I bought it I was assured it was an 80 from the dealer.

jrandol, you can simply measure the diameter of the tubes, going my memory here, the 80 is 4", and the 70 is 3-1/2", but unless you have a manual, or a 3500, you have a 70.

ata don't get your panties in a bunch ... i was referring to the weak automatics, as evidenced by the new transmission this weekend in my signature ... .

actually the D70 is weaker than the auto by chryslers own specs. my 2000 2500 auto(D70) with 4. 10 has an 18000GCWR. My dad has an 01 3500 auto with 4. 10,(D80)his has a 19000GCWR. They both have the 47RE,so that tells me the D70's GCWR limit is 18000 in this case no matter what is in front of it. I am guessing that why they use the hybrid 80 in the maunals, and 3500's. to get the ful tow rating. My D70 has been fine so far sled pulling and drag racign with around 650hp,but i knopw one day its going to chuck the pinion on a pull,LOL.

OK want something good? Its the single best mod i made to my truck. And I have done ALOT of mods. Nothing else on the truck did as much as the trans work.
