I was wondering if anyone has swapped a 727 to 47rh. I have a 89 3/4 ton 4wd. I drive alot on the highway and overdrive is a must.

Welcome to the TDR.

If you go to the top of the page and click on Discusion forums then scroll down to the user control panel. In this section you can list the specs for your truck in the bottom our a post you make. It helps us when you ask questions.

Now to your question.

By the year of your truck and being an auto. It should have 3:08 gears in it unless someone switched out the axles or special ordered something else. I haven't went to a 47RE. But I have a 518 with the same rear axle gears you have.

A OD would be a good addition no matter which trany you get.

I see around 1550 RPM at 60 MPH.

I have done it to my 2wd. You should find Paul Herioux on the member list and look at the threads he started. In one of them he wrote about putting one in his 89 4x4 and it is worth reading.

looking into same swap on wife's truck. other than lock-up is it the same as a 518? wife's shifts real fast. in 3rd at low speed with 18. 5 housing= slug. maybe i'm just used to my 5-spd, but the 518 does not hold a gear long enough to be effective.

I think you might be just used to your 5 speed. Unless 1/2 to full throttle is used the auto's do shift quick. IMO they are not bad it's more waiting for the turbo to spool some. If you cruise at 35 and then give it some fuel it takes a second for the turbo to kick in. At slow speeds while towing it should be pulled down to second, but running empty I think they are fine.
