So, I've had this 73 340 Duster for ever, not a thing in the drive train is original- long story. Anyhow, I stopped by to see an old friend this past weekend and he tells me his neighbor got a trade-in offer of $4500 for his 02, OC, long bed 4 X 4, Cummins. He told me the truck was used for work and has a dumper insert in the bed, but wasn't rusty or too badly beat up, and he thinks it's an automatic. So I do a drive by not getting out to do a close up look. I'm thinking for $4500 I could flip it, double my money at least and add profits to what I have already put away for stuff I need on the Duster. :)

Then the next day at work "pop" an idea that I had thought of before and joked around about with a few fellow CTD guys, but never really considered, seemed to merit a bit more thought with the potential of an inexpensive Cummins and trans:-laf The more I thought about it the more it seemed like not so bad of an idea. I could even swap the diffs from the 02 to my 99 and end up with dual piston calipers in the front and disc rear instead of the blasted drums. And, god knows what other parts I could swap along the way. End up parting the 02 out or even selling it "as is" and make the $4500 back and maybe even some more too boot.

So, like back in the day, roders made "gassers" by sticking a straight axle out of a van under the car and a big honkin engine under the hood.

Well you see where I'm thinking of going: snatch up the 02, pull the eng, trans and all electronics then make an "oiler" out of the Duster.

I've looked under the Duster's hood and based on the space available without measuring the engine in my truck to see if there's any possibility of a fit - I doubt even if it would fit that the front frame section would last, nor would the torque boxes stand up to the Cummins' torque and lastly the torsion suspension would fold on the first speed bump.

So then I figured I could lop off the front frame section, fab some frame rails up and run them from the rear frame section straight up to the front, then after figuring out the engine/trans fit lengthen the sheet metal on the fenders behind the wheel house and mid hood then I'd be able to reuse the rad support, front bumper etc from the Duster concealing the inter-cooler and radiator from the 02.

I figure an edge comp, set of twins and some Mach7 sticks, plus minus about 3200 pounds less weight than the truck should put me down the 1/4 mile in the low 11s as a starting point. But the neatest thing would be driving a diesel powered street legal freak-mobile around town and seeing the looks on the faces of people expecting to see a pick-up or bigger vehicle then see "an old Duster???" Priceless :-laf

It's a far fetched idea, odd, would certainly take some fabrication, metal/body and interior work to pull it off, but I like to be different and the more I think about it the more I like it.

Here ya go I'll call it the "Franken-Oiler".

With enough time and money, you could do just about anything. :D

If I remember correctly, wasn't there an early '70's Monte Carlo that was running around with a Cummins in it a couple years ago?

Did you pay a lot for what you have been smokin? :-laf Shadrach

They go for $10. 75 each ;) = Ashton Maduro 50's tasty and mild. Note link in my signature "Truck Caught Smoking" :-laf

Now as far as the conversion, the more I think about and look into the possibilities the more I like it along with the challenge.

Recent info Duster eng compartment dimensions:

Width @ fender mounting - 54. 5"

Length (closest dimple center of fire-wall to back side or rad support) - 36. 5"

Width between exisitng frame rails (not that it really matters) - 30"

Height - not even a factor - remember the straight axle "gasser" or in this case "oiler"

Rough Cummins eng dimensions:

Length (actually from fire-wall to back side of rad support) - 42"

Width approximate L end mount to R end mount - 24"

Height - not a factor - will weld mount towers however low they need to go to clear hood by 1-2".

So, now that I'm thinking even more, I plan on a triangulated 4 link rear suspension and most likely a narrowed Dana 60 (at least) because I don't think no matter how stout the 8 3/4" MoPar housing I have, even with a back brace welded on could be, that it would withstand 1000+ RWTQ.

Now as far as frame rails - there's a beauty in a unit-body = you can pretty much do anything you want as there's no "full frame" to modify - I'm figuring 2. 5" X 4" or 5" X 1/4" rails should work out, with angled and reinforced areas instead of bends to go up into the front fire wall/floor areas without cutting into the floor too much in an effort to maintain stock bench seat height. As far as my initial idea of adding sheet metal to the hood and fenders at the wheel house center to lengthen the front end for room to maintain the grill, bumper & rad support with the rad & inter-cooler in front, I've reconsidered and am leaning to adding 12" behind the front wheel house to door gap area and the corresponding area of the hood. I'm sure I'll have to "tweak" the trans tunnel and firewall a bit but have to be careful on the firewall as I want to maintain wipers for inspection/street use.

So, the design process continues. . . :D

Here's a crazy thought. Why not just mount the Duster body on the Dodge rollin stock? Shorten the frame/driveshaft if needed and have a 4x4 Duster with Cummins power!

There was a guy in one of the mags a while back who did a beautiful job of installing a 5. 9 in a Buick GNX clone. He did such a nice job he had the GNX guys upset for "destroying" an original Grand National. Shadrach

Hey guys, thanks for all the replies. As far as a crate engine HEMI I'm a guy that likes "different" and although a HEMI in a Duster would be different there's plenty out there - don't get me wrong they're sweet as hell but for around 12k for just the engine . . . I could have built the whole set up and started turning low 11's for way less than the cost of a crate HEMI.

Note that I said "could have" . . . the dream is over, the truck is gone:{ I rode by last night with the plans of stopping buy today and there in its place sat a POS 02 Dakota #@$%! In my opinion the Dakota is in rougher shape than the Ram was. Oh well, looks like I'll have to stick with my warmed over 19 years ago 360 - obviously after a complete tear down and re-working.

Thanks for following along on my short dream - keep in mind it's good to dream - kinda helps keep the ol juices flowing.

I could see it in my mind, white smoke from the warming of the tires mixed with black smoke from the two 3" tail-pipes exiting just in front of the rear wheels, staging, coming up to about 15-20# boost, green light and off we go, about 10' off the line the front end starts to get lite, you feel the wheelie bars catch and then full boost arrives, as you hit the 60' mark the front end returns to earth, slight correction to stay in the groove as you blaze through 2nd, 3rd and OD/lockup. Wicked slow down, turn in and pick up the time slip and it reads 11. 1808 :{:{:{

I'm bummin out big time . . #@$%!:{:(
